Southold Transportation Committee
Southold High School - 4 PM
Minutes - November ]5. 1994
Present: Mike Acebo. Bob Bayley. Neboysha Brashich. Margaret Brown. Victor Brown
It was reported that DOT did a traffic study in Greenport some time (years) ago. We will try to
get a copy to include with our scope of study infornJation for Dunn Associates.
There will be a meeting Wednesday. November 16 at 10:30 AM with Supervisor Wickham. the
Southold Chief of Police Droskoski and members of the Transportation Committee (Neb. Victor.
Merle, and Bob Brown if possible) to discuss hazards of traveling on Rte. 25.
Neb spoke to DOS regarding the changes Merle suggested concerning safety, and those changes
are being taken into consideration. He distributed the new version of the Scenic Byway RFP.
Neb attended the Town Board Meeting this morning and learned that the Board unanimously
approved $3200 to fund a "scope of services" preliminary to our traffic study. Dunn
Engineering Associates will do the work.
Merle attended a meeting in Greenport regarding transportation and traffic. It is hoped that his
report of this meeting will be available to send to Dunn Associates along with the merged
documents being prepared by the Traffic Study Committee.
The Scenic Corridor Management Committee will meet and study the revised Scenic Byway
RFP and will report any changes that need to be made as soon as possible.
The Trails Committee must produce specific dollar amounts needed to establish trails. We will
be using up to $50.000 of Town Recreation funds to develop trails. A budget and time schedule
are needed, and maintenance requirements must be included in the plan. The committee
suggested a second trail from Mattituck train station to Depot Lane in Cutchogue along the
LlRR right-of-way on an existing unpaved farm road. It was also suggested that a bicycle route
could be developed along Narrow River Road, Rte. 25 and Village Lane in Orient. Ultimately
$250.000 from the DOT will be available to implement the actual plan.
A meeting with Ray jacobs, Superintendent of Highways will be set up soon, as his input in
these plans will be valuable.
The Journal has gone back to BOCES and will be ready in 10 days. Letters to accompany the
mailing must be prepared.
Victor spoke to Mark Kulewiscz, AAA, regarding road safety. Mr. Kulewiscz suggested that we
locate the high accident areas, both actual and potential, and the conditions under which
accidents most often occur.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 22 at 4PM. Town Hall Conference Room
Respectfully submitted,
Margaret Brown
