We would like to draw your attention to the neglect that Bailey Beach ("the Bluffs") in Mattituck seems to be suffering from, for at least the third year in a row. The beautiful, wild and isolated beach has turned into a garbage depository. You can find empty bottles, fragments of the former fence, clothing, paper, plastic, dried seaweed pushed up on the sand by the high tide, etc. The rail protecting the entrance from the parking lot has been driven into or pushed aside. We were wondering whose responsibility is to clean up - at least before the weekend - after the obviously irresponsible people who pollute the beach. Most certainly, no one has cleaned the beach before Labor Day weekend. We assume - perhaps wrongly - that, by paying taxes and beach fees, we are entitled to enjoy a clean beach. Please inform us as to what our expectations should be. Speaking of the same beach, it seems that going there to escape noise and pollution is a thing of the past: people drive their ATVs back and forth on the beach, subjecting us to a lot of noise and fumes for hours. They act like they have the right to do this, so who are we to stop them? No authority bothers to check on who's on the beach and what they're doing, except for the cases when police needs to collect. That's when they show up in the parking lot, write tickets and drive away happily. Lastly, the same could be said about jet skis and motor boats that go back and forth, close enough to the shore so we can inhale their fumes, too. Sometimes they 'park' their boats in shallow water right by the shore, spend some time on the beach and leave, only to come back and pick up someone else, and so forth. The noise, the fumes, the pollution of the already polluted Sound, are things that don't seem to bother the people who live in the houses on the beach and no surprise here: many times, the people running their ATVs and boats for the fun of their friends and destruction of the beach goers' quiet day in the nature, are the same ones living, visiting or renting the beach houses. We appreciate your reply and anything you can do about this situation. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Mirella & Alec Menglide 340 North Drive Mattituck, NY 11952
