Field died from shock attributed ~ r. "This bomb was only about 30
yards from the Church with the re-
sult that all the windows were blown
in .and the church itself smothered
> with broken glass, brick rubble and
dust. In places the screen separating
the side chapels from the sanctuary
had pieces of the carving broke~.1
dabs of brick-dust were to be seen
here, there and everYvl.here. The I
sandbags saved the lower part of I
the wonderful screen from damage. I
One of the memorials of the south
wall was dislodged and broken and
one of the bosses of the south aisle
fell, a not surprising fact when one
observed how badly it was worm-
eaten. The organ like everything
else was smothered with dust and
it was inspiring as one stood amongst
the ruins outside two days after the
raid to hear the martial strains of I
the "War March of the Priests" and
the triumphant "Hallelujah Chorus"
pealing forth from unglazed windows. I
The font cover is untouched and its .
delicate tracery bears no trace of'
all that happened. Although the walls;
of the Church are apparently un-
damaged the experts have notified'
that it will be inadvisable to ring-f
the bells for a considerable peri04
(but chiming is quite possible) in
case the Tower may be affected and
with buildings such as the church
it will take a long time to ascertain
whether or not the tower has been
weakened.
"Another bomb hit the church wall
between the church and the hos-
pi tal, and opened a grave in the
immediate vicinity, and bounced
to explode in another part of the
town. It seems that all of the bombs
released boun ced from one part of I:
the town to another. .
"Within- a few minutes helpers'
were at every pOSSible scene of dev-
astation. It 'was quite impossible for
the liriUted !lumber of local A~ R. P.
personnel to cope with every place .
at the same time but they were all
engaged and worked with splendid
and untiring energy. The services
of the military were invaluable in
the emergency and in an incredibly
short space of time had formed
themselves into squads, doing any
and everything that was possible to
render assistance till the early hours
of the morning, and the town gen-
erally has been unstinted __ in _ their
acknowledgements pt.. all that- was

"By Friday the Church had been
cleared and cleaned sufficiently to
enable the building to be used for
the- purpose - of the funeral. services
of -those who were being buried 1m.
the town.
UOn behalf of all readers we ex-
tend to- all those who have los.t rel-
atives or suffered injury or loss our
sincere sympathy in this very trying
period."
And in this last great thought of
sympathy voiced by the editors of
the Southwold Magazine may we in
Southold Town join with deep, sin-
cere feeling.
