A. For new building or new nse:
1. Final survey of property with accurate location of all buildings. property lines, streets, and unusual natural or
topographic features.
2. Final Approval from Health Dept. of water supply and sewerage-disposal (S-9 form).
3. Approval of electrical installation from Board of Fire Underwriters.
4. Sworn statement from plumber certifying that the solder used in system contains less than 2/1 0 of I % lead.
5. Commercial building, industrial building, multiple residences and similar buildings and installations, a certitlcate
of Code Compliance from architect or engineer responsible for the building.
6. Submit Planning Board Approval of completed site plan requirements.
B. For existing buildings (prior to April 9, 1957) non-conforming uses, or buildings and "pre-existing" land uses:
I. Accurate survey of property showing all property lines, streets, building and unusual natural or topographic
features.
2. A properly completed application and consent to inspect signed by the applicant. If a Certitlcate of Occupancy is

a, This application MUST be completely filled in by typewriter or in ink and submitted to the Building Inspector with 4
sets of plans, accurate plot plan to scale, Fee according to schedule,
b, Plot plan showing location of lot and of buildings on premises, relationship to adjoining premises or public streets or
areas, and waterways,
c, The work covered by this application may not be commenced before issuance of Building Permit
d. Upon approval ofthis application, the Building Inspector will issue a Building Permit to the applicant Such a permit
shall be kept on the premises available for inspection throughout the work.
e. No building shall be occupied or used in whole or in part for any purpose what so ever until the Building Inspector
issues a Certificate of Occupancy.
f. Every building permit shall expire if the work authorized has not commenced within 12 months after the date of
issuance or has not been completed within 18 months from such date. If no zoning amendments or other regulations affecting the
property h"ve neen en"cted in the interim. the Building Inspector may authori7e, in writing, the extension of the penn it for an
addition six months. Thereafter, a new permit shall be required,

1. POST SLEEVE INSTALLA IONS
The Trademark Post Sleeve has been de igned to slide
easily over a nominal wood 4"x 4" post a r the deck sub-
structure is complete and the deck board as been fasten'
If the nominal wood 4"x4" post is twisted r oversized it wi
be necessary to shave the post Do not ~ ce the Post
Sleeve as this may cause it to crack or s it The 4"x4" wo
post should extend down to the bottom 0 the rim joist For
firmest attachment, completely "BOX IN" e 4"x4" wood
post and the Post Sleeve so there is sup rt on all four
sides. (see Figure 1) The Post Sleeve m also slide over
wood post that has been mounted to the eck or a con ere'
slab using the Trademark "SURFACE M UNT BRACKET
Note: If optional Post Skirt is to be used, i stall over Post
Sleeve prior to installing railing.
2. POST SLEEVE HEIGHT
CALCULATIONS
Calculate and cut Post Sleeve to require height (see Figl
2). Slide Post Sleeve over 4"x4" wood po t into position. F
36" rail cut Post Sleeve to 37". For 42" rai cut Post SleevE
43".
3. MEASUREMENTS AND CU TING
Measure between posts, top and bottom obtain the rail
length. Also check the rail opening to ens re the Post
Sleeves, newels or walls where the rail is 0 be installed al
square and plumb. To obtain proper belu er spacing be
sure to measure and cut retainer and bott m rail equal
distances from the center. Cut handrail to atch retainer.
4. RETAINERS AND BOTTO RAIL
BRACKET INSTALLATION (s e Figure 3)
Place the "U" shaped end of the paintea ainless steel
bracket on the underside of the retainer a d bottom rail. B
sure to place the bracket just slightly insi (1/16") the cut
edge of the retainer and bottom rail. Mark nd pilot drill ho
wilh a 3/16" bit Drill out the two mounting holes to 3/8".
Note: When drilling for the bottom rail, dril through bottom
wall oniy - do not drill through the top su ce. Using the
enclosed tool, screw the threaded inserts nto the holes fre
the bottom until flush. Be careful not to ov r torque. Install
inserts and fasten brackets with panhead olts to the
underside of the Retainer and Bottom Rai using the 1/4" )
20 panhead screws.
5. ASSEMBLE, FASTEN AND L1DE
Align the ends of each Baluster with the p e-drilled holes il
the Retainer (see Figure 4). Using the 1-3 4" # 8 wood
screws, fasten the Balusters to the Retain r first, through I
pre-drilled holes. Do not over torque. Alig the ends of the
Balusters with the holes in the Bottom Rai and fasten the

Balusters to the Bottom Rail through the re-drilled holes
using the 3" # 8 wood screws. Place the artlally assembh
railing against a solid surface and slide Handrail over t
Retainer. Note: If the mounting brackets ver any ofthe
pre-drilled holes in the Retainer or Botto Rail, or they arE
too close to allow the installation of a Bal ster, do not use
the end Balusters. Seal any exposed hol s with a white
silicone exterior-grade caulking.
6. CENTER RAILING SUPPO T
Install center support in center of railing ( ee Figure 5)
7. LEVEL AND ATTACH RAI ING (see

Level the assembled railing prior to makl g any markings,
drilling. Place assembled railing between osts and level.
Mark holes. Remove assembled railing. rill pilot holes in
the Posts with a 3/16" drill bit. Re-positio assembled railir
and attach to Posts wijh #14 x 2" stainles steel screws.
8, POST CAP APPLICATION
Apply generous amount of construction g ade adhesive to
top edges of Post Cap and press Post C firmly into plac
9. FASTEN HANDRAIL TO R TAINER
Take remaining self drilling screws and I tall up through 1
retainer into the handrail to lock It in plac . Space screws
evenly.
The assembly and installation of stair rail is the same as for horizontal rail (see over) except for ch nges
detailed below. Please read instructions for horizontal rail before attempting to assemble and conv rt to
stair rail.

1. PREPARATION:
First check the rise and run ofthe stairs to dete ine the proper
stair rail angle. (see Figure 7) Check the rail ope ing to ensure
the sleeves, newels or walls where the stair rail i to be installed
are square and plum. Measure between the Pos Sleeves to
obtain the rail length. Be sure to measure betwe n the Post
Sleeves at both top and bottom. TIP: Ensure the roper fit by
cutting a test piece of wood to the previously det rmined length
and angle and fit it into the opening. Once the pr per
measurements have been confirmed, measure t e handrail and
retainer from the center of each part and trim an qual amount
from each side to obtain the top length measur between the
sleeves.

3. DRILLING HOLES RETAINER A D
BOTTOM RAIL
The Retainer and Bottom Rail have been factory rilled for
"horizontal" rail installations to assist with the as mbly. For a
stair rail installation, the Retainer and Bottom rail holes will
need to be re-drilled to match the required stair iI angle. From
the center of the top holes, draw a line the prope angle down
the side of the bottom rail to be used as a guide ee Figure B).
Using a 3/16th bit, drill through the top hole folio ing the angled
guideline, and through the bottom of the rail mak g sure to drill
through as close to the center line as possible. T : Use a drill
guide to ensure accuracy.
4. MOUNTING BRACKETS
Bend the brackets to the proper angle (Top of st ir bend in,
Bottom of stair bend out).
5. ASSEMBLE AND INSTALL
Assemble as per horizontal rail installation instru ions Step #5.

NOTE: 1) For a 36" tall rail, use a 34" 5MB, and for a 42" Tall Rail, use a 40" 5MB. 2) Only usa piace post skirt

1. PLACEMENT
Center the Surface Mount Bracket (SMB) at each post location and mark the mounting hole loons
on the surface. Position the open slot away from all fastening locations.

2. MOUNTING THE POST
Mark 5MB mounting locations onto the deck surface.
, Concrete installation: Drill marked mounting locations with a 3/B dia. Masonry b~ to accept 3/B
dia. x 4" wedge anchors. Gently tap the anchors into the drilled holes.
, Wood Installation: There must be a solid base to fasten 5MB to. A 5" min. thick blocking must
be securely fastened to the structure prior to installation of the 5MB. DO NOT fasten the 5MB
directly to the deck surface. The 5MB is to be installed using 3/B'dia. x 5' lag bolts (the lag
bolts will require a 1/4" pilot hole to ensure the wood foundation blocking does not split).
3. FASTENING
Place the 5MB over the mounting locations. Lightly tighten the mounting fasteners so that the S B can
still move freely, but tight enough for the 5MB to sit flush with the mounting surface.
Note: Wedge anchors are for concrete installation ONLY. For installation to wood surface refer t local building c

4. 5MB ADJUSTMENTS
If the 5MB is out of plumb and or level, add shims to the base of the 5MB.
Check for plumb and square. Repeat until correct.

5. INSTALL RAIL SECTION
. Cut the post sleeves to the desired length and slide them over the 5MBs' squeezing the top of he
5MB to start the post sleeve and slide it down until flush with the base.
. Place assembled rail section between the posts and mark the bracket hole locations onto the
sleeves as per the Railing Installation Guide supplied with the railing kit.
. *IMPORTANT: Remove the rail section and drill the bracket hole locations with a 7/32dia. drill
bit (*THIS DRILL SIZE IS CRITIACAL *). Drill through both the post sleeve and 5MB.
. \Mth all holes drilled, place rail section between posts and install as per the Railing Installation
6. FINAL STEP
With all rail sections installed, tighten all the 5MB base fasteners. Install the 2 piece post skirts
supplied in the 5MB kit (if you have purchased the 5MB alone, you will need to purchase a 2 pi post
skirt to hide the base and fasteners).
. For Concrete installation: If the concrete anchors have tightened leaving the too much thread
exposed for the 2 piece post skirt to install properly, it may be necessary to cut the top of the
wedge anchor so it no longer interferes with the skirts snapping assembly).
