The permit included a brick chimney for a fireplace as well as a new wood deck in the back of the house. The contractor involved in this project failed to contact the Building Department for any of the required inspections. As a result the legal occupation of the constructed premises is still pending. The most recent Building Permit Application dated October 24, 2005 relates to a proposed addition of a family room in the back of the house, which will eliminate the wood deck. I inspected the work that was done in regards to the conversion in 1988 and arrived at the conclusion that the construction was executed in compliance with the NYS Building Code in effect at that time. The garage Floor was raised to create a crawl space with two access openings. The floor system is 2x10's @ 16" O.C. which is in compliance with the required 40 psf live load for residential living areas. Floor, walls and ceiling are insulated. Light and Air requirements for the proposed living room extension are sufficient. The exterior brick chimney is supported on a foundation of solid masonry and extends beyond the ridge. The masonry fireplace has a raised hearth. Firebox and hearth were built as per code.
