Suffolk County Water Authority Well Field Construction Cost Comparison Southold vs. Areas West ofShinnecock Canal Revised 9/6/02 . . . 0# . WelJ Field Cost Comparison The cost of constructing wells and well fields varies within Suffolk County. The cost variances are not due to changes in labor costs or any of the traditional components of construction, rather they are due to the differences in individual well sizes that may be constructed due to local hydro-geological conditions. As a result of these differences, the maximum capacity of a well field will be larger or smaller depending upon the location. In the case of Southold, it has been found through experience that it is not feasible to construct the 1300 GPM well so typically found in areas of the County west of the Shinecock canal. Instead, the wells constructed in Southold need to be constructed in smaller capacities so as to minimize the impact on surrounding wetlands and to prevent vertical or horizontal salt water intrusion. The net result of these differences is a dramatic difference in the capital cost per GPM of well field. Attached are two recent estimates that were prepared for well field construction in these two areas. A summary of the information is as follows: Typical Southold Well Field: Capacity: Aprrox. Cost: Capital Cost/GPM: 200 GPM $650,000.00 (without generator) $3250/GPM Typical Western Suffolk Well field: Capacity: Approx Cost: Capital CostlGPM: 3900 GPM $1,900,000.00 (2 Additional wells@ $400K each) $487/GPM From the above, we can see that the installed capital cost per GPM for a well field in Southold is over six times the cost of one constructed in the western portions of Suffolk County.
