I wish merely the same consideration afforded other business men and taxpayers of the area. The eize of the sign is 7'&B x 14'8". This sign was ordered from and made up by Strout Realty the firm I represent,prior to existing regulations governing s~ch signs. The lettering is lithographed on metal and because of this the size of the sign ca--or be changed. A new sign would have to be made at considerable cost if this one is not approved. Gentlemen: The 478 active members of the Southold-Feconic Civic Association formally protest your granting permission to H.alph I.,l,uinton to place a sign in the restricted area betwwen Sage Boulevard and Mill Creek. The ordinance forbids placing a sign in a business (listrict unless it be to advertise a business conducted on t.he premises. This proposed sign would be for the purpose of advertising a business conducted in the Village of Greenport. Surely there has been no change in conditions in the few weeks since the sign amendment was enavted and it is our understanding from a statement made by the Supervisor that the amendment was enacted with the concurrence of the Board of Appeals and the Planning Board and the 'I1nm Board. The purpose of the amendment was t.o limit the signs :In t.he township and not to increase them. The very section v~here the applicant proposes to erect a sign is part of a strip which is now littered with signs and billboards of all descriptions. This Association was very active in supporting the ,~onine Ordinance and conducts a campaign every year - awarding prizes - to clean up Southold and Peconic and :, ts environs. Its members personally clean up the roadsides removing beer cans and all sorts of rubbish discarded along the roads and at the present time is raising funds to place historic markers as well as shrubs and trees. 'I'he Park Commission recently planted a very nice garden at. the west end of Southold Village and we are endeavoring to clean up the easterly approaches and we feel that to allow anyone to place a si@")l in a forbid!',en area would be a travesty.
