the Cha'rman at 9:00 a.m. 'n the off1,ce of the FE!rry I)'strict.
Present were Comm<ss'oners d~Pont, Doyen, Saker and Evans.
Absent Commissioner Edwards. ThE> ptl.rpose was to d'scuss the
~pcom'n9 contract for the operat'on of M/V's MVNNATAWKET and
OLINPA and option!; i'vai.lable to the Feery D' ::;trIct.

The meet'ng WaS opened with the manager reporting on a ~l:'ip
t9 tIle off; CeS of Suffolk Co~nty Chrl1 $ervI ce in Hauppa\lge
and to the offIce of the Southold Town AttorneY In Greenport.
The tr;p was made with the 'ntent of lnvestigatin9 the poss-
'bU,Hy of the Fert:y 01 stt:~ct rUnning Its own operaUQna.9a1nst
bidd' ng the contract. It had been determLned that anY~IlIP1oy-
eeS of the Ferry D<st'rct directly 'nvolved w'ith the opeJ;'at1on
of our vessels WOl.,lld f\ill lnto the category of "n()n-competH:~ve"
pOSit'ons. Th's would give us the op1:;lon ?f hIrIng our o.m
personnel as opposed to ha,vi ng to select from e1< gible lh1:li!.
The distr'ct would be free to set its own scal~. of wages an~
1evel of permanent full - time personnel >ind part-time p$r$<m-
nel. Full~t'me personnel would be entltled to fr'nge b$neft~s
s~ch as hospitalIzatIon insur;ance and participation in the NeW
~ork State Employee Retirement System. Cqmm'ssloner Evans
questioned what woulo be our optIons w'th reg\ird to droppin~
our own operatIon and go'ng back to a bid process. The mana-
ger was directed to contact Atty. Tasker for a resolution.
D'scuss'on then turned to the matter of the p,esent contract
and bIdding a new contract. It was decided that thecontr~ct
would go out to b<d and that the Ferry Olstr'ct would be pre~
pared to step in and take over the operat'on II; 't appe.re(S
to be to our advantage financially. It was also decided that
the Board would like to ::;'t down w'th Atty. Tasker to d'scuss
the contract. The ~anager was d'rected to contact h<m and
request th\it he come to F< shet's J:slandf,',lc a meet.iflg on Novem'..
