BOX 553
FISHERS ISLAND, NEW YORK 06390
mid-June, 2001
To All Fishers Islanders:
We are pleased to enclose an announcement from Suffolk County authorities of the continuation of its Fishers
Island Mosquito Control Program for the summer season now upon us. The program will provide the Island with
the same effective, environmentally sound and safe protection that the Island has enjoyed in past years - and all
at no cost to you. This year, in addition, two of the applicators who use the safe BTI-type larvicide on our wet-
lands have recently received special N.Y. State Health Department training that will allow them to identify dis-
ease-bearing mosquito species and send any specimens they find to a nearby laboratory for analysis for West Nile
Virus - again at no cost to Fishers Islanders.
Meanwhile, your Conservancy will continue to assist the County in the recruitment and DEC-approved training
and certification of the Program's larvicide applicators, while FIDCO will continue its support of the Program
by arranging housing and transportation for the applicators - both resulting in optimum staffing of the Program
and substantial savings to taxpayers. We regret that actions of the N.Y. State DEC prevented the certified appli-
eators from starting the program on Memorial Day when they were ready.
We wish all of you a safe and healthy summer.

To all Fishers Island Residents:
FISHERS ISLAND MOSOUITO PROGRAM
Suffolk County Department of Public Works, Division of Vector Control is pleased to inform you that it will be
continuing its mosquito control program in Fishers Island this season. Under this program, as in the past, only
microbial larvicides will be used. They will be applied to Island wetlands on an "as needed" basis by applicators
certified by the DEC, operating under the County's DEC permits and the County's supervision. These larvicides
specifically target only mosquitoes and black flies and do not significantly affect other insects, fish, animals or
plants. They are among the most environmentally friendly pesticides approved by the USEPA and NYDEC. All
of the certified applicators will be direct employees of the County, rather than Town of Southold employees as
in the past.
This year, two of the applicators have had special training that will enable them to identify mosquito species that
could carry the West Nile Virus and then send them to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services for
.viral testing.
In past years nearly all Fishers Island residents owning or abutting the Island's wetlands have participated in this
program. However, if you have concerns or object to the treatment of the wetlands on or abutting your property,
please call the Fishers Island Mosquito Control crew at 631-788-7130 or the undersigned at 631-852-4270.
