5/13/02 Fishers Island Water Works Annual Water Supply Statement for the Year 2001
This Annual Water Supply Statement is provided in compliance with chapter 752, Title III,
and Sections 1150-1153 of the New York State Public Health Law. This statement provides
basic information relative to the current status of the water quality and conservation for Fishers
Island. A review of water conservation measures available to our Island customers is noted
below.
Currently, the primary source of ground water supply is provided by three wells in the
Middle Farms area of the Island. These wells have been surveyed and permitted by the Suffolk
County Health Department and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Daily testing by plant personnel includes PH, temperature, turbidity, phosphate, iron and
chlorine residual. Water quality at the source is excellent. A treatment plant, which includes
emergency power generation, is used to introduce soda ash (PH control) and liquid hypochlorite
15% (for disinfection) into the system. This water source meets all criteria established by
Federal and State agencies.
During 200 I, plant personnel took a total of 56 bacteriological samples from the distribution
system and the wells of the Fishers Island Water Works. Additional testing and samples were
done by Suffolk County Health Department. A private lab, H2M Corporation, located on Long
Island, supplies the analysis of our mandated testing.
The source of surface water supply is Barlow Pond, supplemented in dry weather by Middle
Farms and Treasure Ponds. Generally the water quality of the source is good, with the PH of
untreated water relatively low (acidic). After full treatment at the surface water plant, this
source meets all the water criteria established by the Federal and State agencies.
The approximate population served, ranges from allow of 250 during the winter months, to
a peak of 3,000 during the summer. The total amount of water pumped during the year of 2001
was 63,342,900 gallons. Metered and billed customers accounted for 79% of the water
pumped. The remaining 21 % is attributed to main breaks, Fire Department use, intra-company
use, water main flushing and ongoing system losses.
Fishers Island Water Works may implement a conservation program in 2002. Each
individual customer should be aware of certain measures, such as retrofitting plumbing fixtures,
installing rain sensors for automatic lawn watering systems, repairing water leaks in the home
and conserving water for personal use, in order to insure that supplies may be maintained.
Today's water conservation is tomorrow's supply.
The annual charge for water in 2001, as set by the New York State Public Service
Commission, was $6.65 per thousand gallons.
Copies of any of our test results are available at the Utility office. Please feel free to call the
water plant (631) 788-7422 or utility office (631) 788-7251 with any questions concerning our
water.
Respectfully submitted,
