HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/29/2004 Fishers Island Community Center Meeting Minutes for 9/29/04, 5pm Fishers Island Village Office Karla welcomes those attending and discusses agenda briefly as well as introduces Mere Harr, the new Island Institute Fellow to those who don't know her, she will be the note taker for the board from now on. Sarah Moody talks about the tax-free status and mentions the Henry King said it was better that IPP is not involved for this reason. There is discussion about how we can tie the pool component into the school somehow. We need to figure out how to do this without any IRS problems; Henry will continue to look into this for us. Sara McLean then reported on her trip up to Watermans Community Center. She had pictures and some rough dimensions of the size. There building is basically about Y2 the size of what we are proposing and they have more like 350 year round population. . Main room Y2 the size of ours, maybe we could shrink that and make more storage in that area? . Theater has about 150ish seats and a stage. . Daycare is basically in the 'greenroom' off the stage, this is only a problem when they have a big production to do. . They are double using that Daycare as a teen space, and they feel like that has been a less successful idea, the double use. . Movie night is the biggest hit, using it 3 nights/days a week all year. . Have an after school program for everyday. Games, learning, cooking and good deeds etc. [We discuss that fact that the FI school has after school programs that cover all of that and do not intend to shift that activity to the proposed Community Center]. . Much use as Senior coffee hour. . Summer staff: 3 college interns @ $8/hour. [We need to think about supervision for 20 hours per week and cleaning too] . Theater is 35' deep and 21' wide, with 16 rows and 12-14 seats in each row. . Daycare room is 15'X30-35' deep. [We need to think about costs and pay for setters and we need a head count as to who will use this service]. Fundraising priorities are discussed such as where is the FIDCO recreation trail? What are the churches doing? -There has been talk that St. John's has been considering adding room for a coffee hour space for seniors. We need to figure out how to deal with these overlapping ideas and issues. Get proactive before anything happens like that. Karla gave a quick report on potential lifeguards. What might it cost? Who will be willing to do it? There is interest on island. As it stands, we have 3 certified lifeguards living on FI and 2 possible who are interested in getting certified. It was discussed that the school would be an ideal place to recruit lifeguards. In the past, lifeguards for Dock Beach have come over on the ferry during the summer. We should get numbers on that. Lastly, the brochure is discussed. We might want to present this as a 3 tier project; the core building, the pool, and the endowment. This may make the funding easier to swallow, but this needs to be discussed. Watermans did a brochure and it was very successful. The pictures were looked at again and the meeting drew to an end. Meeting adjourned by Karla and next meetings discussed. Next meetings: Oct. 13, Nov. 3, Nov. 23, all at 5:30pm in the Village Office. Minutes respectfully submitted by, Meredith Harr, Note taker for FICC Board
