Lavouts:
Sara McLean began by describing her Community Center layout. She couldn't figure out
what would go on the second floor of the building. She felt that neither the day care nor
the arts and crafts could go on the second floor. If there was a two-story theater, then
maybe the extra space created by the second story could be used as storage. Grace
described here layout and she had a one-story building with a long profile. Sarah Moody
included a 2nd floor in her layout in order to decrease the profile of the building. On the
2nd floor would be the arts & crafts room and the workout room. She is particularly
worried about the size and the cost. Maybe the small multi-purpose room could be
eliminated. Grace wondered if we could frame out a 2nd floor. We would then have the
ability to use the space if it became necessary. Karla also had a 2nd floor that included the
small multi-purpose room, the arts & crafts room, and the day care center. In her layout
the first floor included: the office, the large multi-purpose room, and the workout area.
She didn't include the theater or the Y:, gym in her layout.
The group discussed whether there was a need for a 2nd, smaller multi-purpose space if
we have a dedicated arts & crafts room. The group discussed the need for a teen center
that could replace the small multi-purpose space. So, instead of a space that could be
adapted to many uses, the group felt that it was more appropriate to have a teen center.
The group that went to Maine learned that staffmg the facility was a problem and are we
prepared to staff a teen center because it is very hard to rely on volunteers. It was felt that
if people want the space, they would volunteer. The group also felt that having the day-
care center on the 2nd floor was problematic for a number of reasons. The group also
discussed why the office should be near the workout facility. This arrangement would
make it easier to oversee the workout room and increase safety.
In her layout, Judi didn't include the pool. She had the large multi-purpose room, the
office, theater, small multi-purpose room, workout room, day care, and arts & crafts
room. She felt that seniors could use the large multi-purpose room for a number of
activities so it should be in the front of the building for ease of access.
John had the multi-purpose rooms on the wings of the theater, so that they could be used
as theater storage. In addition they could open up create one large multi-purpose room.
Grace wondered if the seats would be fixed? The group felt that if the seats were not then
we would have to create storage for them as well as extra work to move them around.
The group wondered how far away is the potential movie theater project from completion
and how that would impact our need for a theater. There seem to be a number of
unresolved issues that may not get cleared. Bruce felt we have to decide if we want a
theater or not because we can't have a halfway theater. There are a number of issues
surrounding a theater such as including bathrooms, etc. John thought that our group
should put together exactly what we need regardless of the other project and that a theater
should be included.
The group discussed including a pool or not and what impact that may have on the
Community Center's success. Gail felt that we should include in the facility things that
the community would use and she felt that people would use a pool. Many felt that this
was true but that the cost, both for construction and the operation, was too high, at least
during the first phase. We could include the pool in the design of the facility, but not
construct it during the first phase.
Bruce asked the group what they felt the style of the building should be. The group felt
that the style should be in keeping with the fort area and Fishers Island. Bruce said that
the building's style would be in keeping with the picture of the old hospital building,
though not as high or near to the massing of that building. In the drawings, he would
include all of the pieces but there would be ones that could be taken off as part and
included in different phases. Bruce collected the different layout options and will create
floor plans and elevations
The next meeting is tentatively schedule for two weeks from now. Bruce will wntact Judi
with a day that works for him.
John and Sarah Moody are going to meet with IPP and Diana Fiske about incorporating
the Community Center within IPP's existing structure.
Nate, Judi, Sara McLean, Sarah Moody, and John Spofford will begin creati~.a~klet
explaining our efforts. .
