Trip to ~aine:
Nate updated the group with information regarding the trip to visit ~aine. Sara thought
that Sarah ~oody should come on the trip because she'll probably be involved with
future efforts and has been in the past, but Sara doesn't know when she'll be back on the
island. Nate wondered who would be making the trip to ~aine? Gail and Judi are the
only ones who could make the trip; Sara probably cannot, so maybe we should try
another time. Two weeks later, ~ay 19fu through 21 ", is better for the group? At that
time, Sara, Jeanne, Gail, Judi can definitely make the trip. Nate will contact the
community centers in ~aine about the change in schedule.
Survev:
Nate updated group on seasonal residents survey responses and he'll continue to input
information and will send information to the rest of the group.
Email:
Judi read an email sent to Peter Rugg. Peter contacted Judi about our efforts.
Jeanne heard that a considerable amount of money has been put into bringing the ~ovie
Theater up to code and the Ferry District may not want to sell. Gail has heard that the
Ferry District is willing to hear offers about the ~ovie Theater. Jeanne wondered what
the cost of rehabilitating the building might be. Sara thought that including a pool would
increase that costs, possibly a considerable amount.
Reports:
A.
Jeanne said that the owners of the ordinance building are not interested in selling the
building. They that maybe building 98 would be an attractive option because the roof
doesn't leak, it is structurally sound and maybe large enough to include a pool. Sara said
that 10 years someone tried to put a health club into that building but it didn't work. Gail
wondered what the reason was and that we should look into why. We should ask others
who have tried to do something with the building about their efforts. Sara thought that we
should ask FIDCO because they own the building.
B.
Jeanne will continue to look into the costs of energy and maintenance for the school.
C.
Sarah read an article from New York Times about installing indoor pools into Manhattan
homes. Gail felt that we need to investigate the costs of indoor pools more. Judi thought
that above ground pools may be the cheapest option that fits our needs. Jeanne wondered
if their was an option between an in ground or above ground pool. Sara said that if we
build an above ground pool we could put a structure around the pool that masks that the
pool is above ground. Jeanne said that this was done by North Adams College and was
very well done and nice.
Judi read report to the group about above ground pools and showed a number of pictures
of above ground pools. Sara wondered if we want a lap pool or something more
appealing to children? Gail felt that kids would still use a lap pool and that we could have
different times for different age groups. Judi thought that it would be wise to avoid
having a diving board because of insurance costs. Sara wondered how we get more
information about the total costs of building an indoor pool. Judi will contact some
companies and she is still waiting on information from some other companies.
D.
Jeanne is still waiting on some tax maps, though the school does own a considerable
amount ofland. Sara wondered what the zoning is for the land around the school. Also,
she wondered why the town held onto the tennis courts. Gail said that the town maintains
the courts, so the cost of maintaining them dissuaded us from taking the tennis courts
over.
Movie Theater:
Sara said that there isn't a need for the current number of seats, at least not in the winter.
We could possibly gut the building and include an above ground pool. We should ask
Bobby about building 98 and Gail wondered who currently uses the building. It has the
laundromat, Diaz construction, and Jay Scanlon is at the end of the building toward the
basketball court.
Janio said that the next FICA membership meeting is on Memorial Day weekend at 4
PM, but there is a FICA board of directors meeting May 8th. Jeanne said that we need to
have a summary of the findings so far at the membership meeting. Sara felt that this
would help to address any questions that will come up. In addition we need to have a
meeting before the FICA meeting to develop our presentation. The group felt May 24th at
7 pm would work.
Jeanne said that she will call Southold to determine the cost for their community center
and pool as well as any other information. She said that Laurie Finan still has the grant
application material. Judi wondered if we should find someone to begin to draw up plans
for the community center? Sara felt that we need to find out how many people will be
using our facility. We can learn this from the community centers in Maine and can
detennine the size that is needed to support their population, which is similar to ours.
Nate will send Judi the list of skills from the seasonal residents survey.
Next steps:
Nate will continue to input the surveys, send list of skills to Judi, email the information
from the year round and seasonal surveys to the group, and contact the community
centers in Maine about the change in schedule.
Jeanne will continue to look into the ownership of the land behind the bowling alley.
Judi will look into pool costs.
Next meeting:
May 24th at 7 pm in the School
