HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/24/2004 Fishers Island Community Center Research Committee Wednesday, March 24th, 2004 at the Fishers Island School Attending: Gail Cypherd Jan Cook Susele King Nate Gray Karla Heath Jeanne Schultz Judi Imbriglio, Chair Judi began the meeting by reading Jeanne's draft for the next survey. Judi wondered if we should include question 1: "Do you think that Fishers Island needs a community center?" Jeanne asked what type of information that we want to get out of the second survey and that will help to determine if we should include that question. Karla thought that we should rephrase it to, "Do you think that Fishers Island would benefit from having a community center?" The group agreed that that was a better question. Jan said that Harold thinks that the Movie Theater building will cost a lot of money to refurbish because it has not been touched in years. She felt that we should pick a number of places as options then have an inspector look at the buildings. Judi wondered if we should change question 3 on the survey to "membership fee" and not "use fee"? Jan wondered what if someone wants to come and use the community center but doesn't want to become a member? Gail thought that there could be different fee structures. Judi said that people may pay the fee just to support the community center, but might not use it. Gail thought that question 5 on the survey should include "what are your talents" and that question 6 could be more specific about the planning committees. Jeanne thought maybe rephrasing question 6 to, "What are you interested in?" Gail wondered if any of the options were missing from the list. Jeanne said that all of the options had been included, but she left out storage because that seemed to be something needed to be included in the design. Judi said that we could have a great room at the community center with dividers, so that the room could be partitioned. Jeanne said that kitchen facilities need to support the daycare and senior center. Jeanne wondered if the survey should be in color? Gail wondered who would pay for color printing and if we should do boxholder drop or address each one? Judi thought that we should address each one because people may not check their on-island box and wondered what list we are going to use? Gail will combine the IPP and Fire Department appeals letter list. She also has a printer and can print some of the surveys, in color, at work, if needed. '. .:', > . Membership is $395 for family of four. This fee covers exercising and the pool, other activities have a fee. There are different types of memberships and each comes with different benefits. She also passed around information about other community centers. Judi read a number of emails that she received from Sarah Moody regarding the development committee and other issues related to the community center. Jeanne spoke with John Spofford and he knows people that are interested in working on the development committee. Judi thought the Gail's idea of a cocktail party to generate interest in the community center is a good one. Jeanne thought that we should contact John Spofford about beginning the work of organizing the foundation. Gail said that we should invite people that had concerns or wanted to be contacted to help, maybe not just one party/ dinner, but a series. She is going to begin to do this. She felt that we need to have all of our ducks in a row before Memorial Day arrives. Judi thought that we should invite John Spofford and Sarah McLean to our next meeting and talk with them about the development committee. Judi and Nate will work on something for the Gazette. Jeanne wondered if we should begin to prioritize different locations and buildings for the community center. Susele thought so and felt that we should put together a list of options and then begin to narrow that list down. Gail thought that we could add site selection to the list of possible committees. Jeanne thought that someone would certainly volunteer to help with the design of the center. Jan thought that the old buildings on the island are so expensive to refurbish because they're so run down and need too much work. Jeanne thought that the area near the police building is enough for a center. Jan agreed and said that everyone wants to see the Movie Theater used in some way. Gail thought that we need to first show that it is too expensive to use the Movie Theater before looking at other options. Jeanne updated the group about the letter sent by Senator Schumer regarding an alcohol/ drug prevention grant that we qualifY for. Both Karla and Gail have spoken with Paul and Chippy about the Movie Theater. Both are open to discussing using the Movie Theater as a community center. Next meeting: Monday, April 5th at 7:00 PM
