Nate handed around the information that he received from Waterman's, the community
center on North Haven, and spoke about the information and conversation about the
Chebeague Recreation Center.
Judi thought that John Spofford has paper work that was developed during an earlier
survey effort. She also spoke about her husbands idea that community center could start
at the Movie Theater. Questions are about where people would park? There is space to
expand and we could utilize the existing space. This could be a starting point. The ferry
district owns the property.
Gail received permission to use the ferry district's list to determine year round residents,
but the information is not to be passed around.
We need to get the survey out before the busy season. What should the header be? Do we
need one? The Fishers Island Community Center Interest Survey is a possibility.
Judi has been in contact with Sarah Moody a number of times about the earlier survey
and their results.
Possible structure:
-- 2 to 3 sentence preface
n List of choices with a few "others" for people to add comments
Judi felt that after the first survey is distributed, we should make another survey to send
to the FICA membership. We'll need to fine-tune the 2nd survey to include the results of
the first survey. A question to think about is who will run the community center.
Rosemary wondered if we should think about competing with existing island businesses.
A concern raised in the first survey was putting existing island businesses out of business.
The group thought that a community center theater doesn't need to be as big as the
existing movie theater. Including island offices in the community center might be a good
idea and actually could be a place for a town office.
Judi said that we should stress that the survey needs to get turned around quickly,
possibly within a week.
The group discussed the movie theater option. Is it possible to get the building? Maybe
we could lease it, buy or actually, be given the property. It may be cheaper to build a
whole new building. Using an existing building may be a good starting point and could
pull in more people by using an existing building. Once the survey is finished, we need to
contact the ferry district, but first need to determine what would be in a community
center.
Rosemary wondered if the idea for a community center had ever come from the winter
community. Judi said no and that this is important.
Janio said that Art Walsh mentioned using the land between the bowling alley and tennis
courts for the community center. Frank Burr would be a good person to contact about this
possibility.
Next steps:
-- Nate will compile questions and write a rough draft of the survey to distribute to the
group.
-- Next meeting: 2/17 at the school
