CALL TO ORDER
REGULAR MEETING
BOARD OF EDUCATION
FISHERS ISLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT
July 15, 1997
Meeting was held in the Business Education room of the Fishers Island
School and was called to order at 8:02 p.m. by Board of Education
President Susan Horn.

S. Horn led the Pledge of Allegiance
C. O'Connell reported on programs and activities at school. He reported
that the cost ofthe NYSSBA policy update service was $550. He
also explained the position of surrogate parent on the CSE and CPSE

MINUTES
FINANCE
Approval of the minutes of the regular meeting ofJune 10, 1997 were
TABLED until it can be determined who can vote on these minutes.
Motion by G. Horning, seconded by J. Edwards, and carried, the minutes
ofthe Reorganization Meeting ofJuly 1, 1997, were approved as
submitted.
Motion by G. Horning, seconded by J. Edwards, and carried, the
reading of the bank reconciliations prepared by C. Doherty, for the
month ended June 30, 1997 was accepted as read.
General Fund checking $561,450.29
General Fund savings #1 $5,960.42
General Fund savings #2 1,145.45
Repair Reserve Fund #1 88,033.45
Repair Reserve Fund #2 62,730.04

Motion by G. Horning, seconded by S. Horn, and carried, June 30, 1997
General Fund warrants/checks #21 728 - #21 734 in the amount of
$2,565.97 and Faculty Housing warrant/check #688 in the amount of
$370.58 were approved for payment.

FINANCE
Motion by G. Horning, seconded by J. Edwards, and carried, July 1997
General Fund warrants/checks #21735 - #21760 and #21767 in the
amount of $37,280.20 were approved for payment.
CORRESPONDENCE C. O'Connell read a letter Girl Scout Troop #3834 of Norwich, CT
requesting permission to sleep-over in the School August 16.
Motion by G. Horning, seconded by J. Edwards, and carried, the Board
approved the request from Girl Scout Troop #3834 to use the school
building/facilities August 1 6 and August 1 7.
C. O'Connell read a letter from S. Horn stating her concern about the
music played during the slide show at graduation.
C. O'Connell read a letter from Anne Burnham stating her resignation
from the Board of Education effective June 30, 1997.
C. O'Connell read a memo from the Fishers Island School Faculty
regarding faculty concerns regarding role of special service providers.
C. O'Connell read a memo from Carol Giles requestion an extension of
her housing (T-4) lease to September 10.
Motion by S. Horn, seconded by J. Edwards, to extend Carol Giles' lease
to September 7 provided she paid one week's rent. Motion defeated
(2 yes; 1 no (Horning).

At 8:37 p.m. G. Horning left the meeting.
At 8:38 p:m. S. Horn left the meeting.
At 8:40 'p.m. G. Horning and S. Horn returned to the meeting.
OLD BUSINESS:
STANDARDS FOR C. O'Connell reported that the proposed policy still requires revision.

SCHOOL ROOF C. O'Connell reported that the SED has lost the initial application set.
BOARD VACANCIES C. O'Connell reported that J. Edwards had informed him of her desire to
resign from the Board of Education after this meeting.

APPOINTMENT Motion by S. Horn, seconded by J. Edwards, and carried, the Board
appointed William Faulkner to the Board of Education effective
immediately until the special district meeting to be held August 26,
1997.
The Oath of Office was administered to W. Faulkner, and he joined the
meeting.

LIBRARY C. O'Connell reported the committee was working in the Library

C. O'Connell reported on the bid opening for painting at Faculty Housing
Housing Units T-3 and T-4.
Motion by W. Faulkner, seconded by G. Horning, and carried the Board
awarded the painting projects at Housing Units T-3 and T-4 to Harold's
for the combined bid total of $13,400.00 (thirteen thousand four
hundred dollars).
Motion by G. Horning, seconded by W. Faulkner, and carried, the Board
approved an educational reimbursement grant request in the amount of
$830.00 for Carol S. Giles for three graduate credits at SUNY
Buffalo from July 20 through July 25, 1997.
The Board reviewed the agenda.
M. Walter commented on the faculty memo concerning the special
service providers.
M. Walter commended on the space committee.
M. Walter commented on the Board of Education vacancies.
Motion by G. Horning, seconded by W. Faulkner, and carried, the
Board adjourned the meeting at 9: 1 5 p.m.
