Skaufle, M.D., to serve as the new physician on Fishers Island. Dr. Skaufle will be working exclusively at the Fishers Island office and not at other Sound Medi- cal facilities but he will have consulting privileges at L&M Hospital. Dr. Skaufle expects to arrive on Fishers later this fall when his New York State and Connecticut licensure and other cre- dentials are complete. He will reside in the house on Madeline Avenue owned by IHP. Dr. Skaufle’s wife, Jill Cirivello, who visited Fishers over a beautiful weekend in September, will complete her contract as a lawyer for a Davenport school district in the spring, and then will join her husband. Dr. Skaufle has extensive experience as a family practice doctor and administrator. After initial service as a private prac- titioner in Wells, Minnesota, Dr. Skaufle moved to Davenport, Iowa and has practiced there for the past 20 years. Davenport is located on the Mississippi River across from Rock Island, Illinois. From 1984- 1992 he was a Physician and faculty member at Davenport’s Quad Cities Genesis Family Practice Residency Program. In 1992, until recently, he was the director of the same program. In these positions, he encountered the usual range of medical problems that would be expected in a rural population, including pediatric, internal medicine, geriatric and emergency issues. He directly practiced medicine, was an administrator and taught in the residency program during these years. For most of these 20 years he also served as the Medical Director for the Du- rant Ambulance Service and the Good Samaritan Care Center (a nursing home) as well as sitting on the Scott County EMS Physi- cians Advisory Board. During the last year, Monte and Jill have been looking for a unique job opportunity that would change their life style. Their love of islands and interest in the East coast, where they have vacationed, sparked their interest in the job on Fishers Island. Dr. Skaufle was born in Montana and grew up in Minnesota. Jill, who is a registered nurse as well as holding a law de- gree, was born and raised in Iowa. They are very interested in boating, owning a New England Catboat and three kayaks at pre- sent. Both are also avid cyclists and enjoy tennis. After their visits here they are eager to come to Fishers Island and join in island living. Their five grown children, who reside in different parts of the country, are eagerly anticipating visits to Fishers. We look forward to welcoming them and know the island community will make them feel at home. éÕØêÒÔÏÏØËiÊÐÔÏÔÜÉÈËØÕÎËÊØÊÕÜÇØÛØØÏÉË¿ª»´·²¹ ¬± ¿²¼ º®±³ Ú·¸»® ×´¿²¼ ¬¸· «³³»®ò Ø»®» · п«´ ¿²¼ ¸· Why should these Nantucket people have all the fun? The Fishers Island Library and the Island Office are sponsoring a collection or limericks from Fishers Island. These are to be written by YOU and ABOUT Fishers Island. The goal is to collect as many of these creative brain dropping over the winter as possible and put them together in a collection to be bound and made available at the F.I. Library. There will be a panel of judges and the top ten will be published in The Fog Horn in February. The deadline is January first, so spend the winter collecting your thoughts. They want AS MANY as possible, so don’t be shy, send several entries, all types are welcomed!! Here are a couple tips and examples to refresh you on how limericks work: A limerick is a five-line poem written with one couplet and one triplet. If a couplet is a two-line rhymed poem, then a triplet would be a three-line rhymed poem. The rhyme pattern is a a b b a with lines 1, 2 and 5 containing 3 beats and rhyming, and lines 3 and 4 having two beats and rhyming. Some people say that the limerick was invented by soldiers returning from France to the Irish town of Limerick in the 1700's. Limericks are meant to be funny. They often contain hyperbole, onomatopoeia, idioms, puns, and other figurative de- vices. The last line of a good limerick contains the PUNCH LINE or "heart of the joke." As you work with limericks, remember to have pun and fun. Say the following limericks out loud, you might try and clap to the rhythm. ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ × ±²½» °»²¬ ¿ §»¿® ±² ¿ ®±½µò ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ß½½»»¼ ±²´§ ¾§ ¾±¿¬ ¿²¼ ¿ ¼±½µ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ¼¿ ̸±«¹¸ ³¿´´ ¿²¼ ¯«·¬» ¯«¿²¬ éÕØçÔÏØÄÜËÙÔÉÜÔÏiÉ Remember: If a limerick does not flow easily when read aloud, there is ôÉiÊÐÈÚÕÛØÉÉØËÉÕÜÏÉÕÜÉÎËÉÕØûÑÎÚÒ probably something wrong with it. Whether the content is for kids or adults, clean or bawdy, a good limerick must be clever. We encourage ALL kind of submissions and ask only that curse words be left out. They can be bawdy or tongue-in-cheek, these are some of the best. They just must be about some element of Fishers Island. This can range from nature to boats, be about people or events, all things Fish- ers. All age groups and styles are welcome. You can stick to the above format or have longer diatribes using this format for sev- eral stanzas, be creative. You have the winter to write. Send entries in as you come up with them and the whole thing will culmi- nate in an evening at the Library with a public reading event for anyone brave enough to do so. Details on this to follow. For now, send ideas to: F.I. Library at P.O. Box 366 or drop off in person OR mail to the Island Office at P.O. Box 464 or drop off in person.
