LoGrande, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Suffolk County Water Authority 4060 Sunrise Highway Oakdale, NY 11769-0901 RE: Request for guidance in constructing Water Authority Buildings and sites in Peconic, NY. Dear Michael, This is in response to your letter of May 16, 1994, requesting input on the architecture and landscaping of the proposed water-supply related buildings on the northwest corner of County Route 48 and Mill Lane, Peconic. The Board reviewed the plan you sent. They recommend placing street trees along both road frontages. The trees should be 40' apart on-center, and could be set back from the road and property line for a distance (say 20'). set The Board wondered whether a fence was necessary inasmuch as none of the supply sites and pumping stations for Greenport Village are fenced. However, if fencing is felt to be necessary, perhaps it could be placed between the street trees and the proposed buildings within the heart of the compound. A mix of low maintenance shrubs could be planted just outside the fence to camouflage it. The shrubs could be a mix of flowering shrubs including forsythia and rosa rugosa and non-flowering shrubs such as barberry and russian olive. (Actually, a mature row of brambly shrubs with thorns such as barberry, blackberry, and wild rose, for instance, can function just as effectively as a fence for most intents and purposes.) As for the facade of the utility building, we would like to suggest brick facing with white trim, and a pitched, shingled roof. An elevation drawings will be sent to you under separate cover from Dick Ward's office. We thank you for this opportunity. Si~eerely, ·own Planner Michael A. On one copy I have highlighted the structures on the site. The red outline is the building which we generally use -- a prefab, exposed aggregate, fiat-roof architectural wonder (see photo). The two brown outlines are wellheads. We intend to use the pitless alternative which does have a Iow box topped by a vent stack (not more than four feet high). Finally, the brown dotted line shows the backup generator which we could screen with landscaping. I would appreciate some guidance on the structure, fencing and landscaping that would be complimentary to the town. We would also appreciate any suggestions or thoughts or advise yo, r~y offer.
