Dear Board,
Date 11/28/05
I am writing to you on behalf of Scott and Harriet Kaufman, who recently purchased a waterfront
property off of Dignans Road, in Cutchogue, NY. SCTM# 1000-83-02-7.3 I'm sure your
members are familiar with the stretch of beach heading east from Duck Pond Point ( see map
included). There has been some extensive shore hardening work done in this area in recent
times. The Kaufman property currently has no hard shoreline structures. Several recent coastal
storms have caused significant erosion to the property's beach, bluff face and bluff toe.
The Kaufmans have asked me to explore short and long term solutions to this phenomenon. In
consideration of the time required to design and permit a long term solution, the owners have
expressed a desire to act immediately, and do what is possible, with minimal permitting, to get
some 'soft' erosion protection installed.
Pursuant to your granting of permission, the Kaufman's would like to insta~ tw6'row~
of non-treated spruce snow fencing with x 3 x 7 t~mber post ~n the upper httoral zone
between the bluff toe and the mean high water line for the length of the property, some 214.50
ft., and in selected areas on either side of the timber stairs leading to beach. Landward of each
row of fencing open straw hay bails (natural and untreated) will be laid to a depth of 12" ( + -).
The combination of snow fencing and the straw hay will trap slumping sediment from the bluff
face and sediments in the littoral drift. Permission is also requested to maintain and/or replace
the snow fencing and hay as needed subject to coastal storm damage until a longer term solution
is permitted and installed.
Included please find a copy of the most recent survey showing the area to be snow fenced
highlighted in yellow.
Thank you for your time and consideration. As with all Muse Design projects here on eastern
Long Island, the environmentally sensitive nature of the site will be given the utmost
consideration. Please contact me if you need further information, support materials, etc...
Best, Thomas2. Muse/~. ,~.~
