Hunter in January of this year and was inspected. The insulation job did not pass inspection then because Hunter installed R-30 instead of R-38 in the second story ceiling and in the attic rafters. The mud and snow thereafter made it impossible to access the building site until recently. On advice of Mr. Hunter, I would like to inform you of changes we have made since January with respect to the insulation job. - Attic Rafters: R-30 insulation has been removed(presently stored in the basement for use to insulate the basement ceiling). Ventilation channels have been installed leading from roof vents to the attic and R-19 plus unfaced R-30 has been installed between the rafters to achieve a total of R-38+insulation value. - Second story ceiling: 2x6 ceiling beams have been converted to 2x8 so as to better accomodate thicker insulation. (Previously,half the ceiling was 2x6, half was 2x8).New R-30 insulation has been installed in the ceiling. To achieve a higher insulation R-value, R-19 unfaced could be spread over the attic floor,but that would hinder access to the attic (to be done via a drop- ceiling stair from the back upstairs bedroom). Mr. Hunter's question is whether the beefed-up rafter insulation plus the increased insulation thickness ceiling space would be sufficient to satisfy code.
