Gentlemen:
We have the request from the To~n Board for a lower ma~imum
speed on Village La~e, a town highway in Orient. Although this
request Mas on a copy of our form TC-9, it was not endorsed by
the Suffolk County Commissioner of Public Works.
Section 1622 of the New York State Vehicle a~d Traffic Law
empowers this Commission to establish speed restrictions on
town highways ~ud cour~ty roa~s only after we have received a
joint request from the to~,~ board az~d the county superintendent
of highways of the town and cotmty involved, respectively. In
this case, we ~y not take action until a request has been sub-
mitted by both the Town Board and the Suffolk Couuty Commissioner
of Public Works. Iu. the event that the County Com~nissioner of
Public Works does not find it advisable to concur with the recom-
mendation of the Town, it isnot legally possible for us to
authorize a lower max~um speed.
Very truly yours,
