Dear Mr. Petrou:
When I initially wrote the State, In the summer of I gg$, aix~ut the dangerous traffic conditions
existing in our ama, I explained that om of the busiest tourist areas on eastern Long Island Is on
Route 25 in front of tho farm stands and vine~ar~ between E .ugene's Roam and Indian Neck Lane.
After ~eral ~ounds of Indifferent form letters, I became frustrated and asked that your depart-
ment at least ~nsids~ the eafetv of our childran Ilving on Main P_~ed__ and attending school on Main
Road. Your reSlx~nea to our ~peaI by lowering the s!0eed limit apl~roaching the scSI from east or
west, is very much appreciated.
After not hearing, from your depertmant for several months, I began a petition. The issue of safety
is one of great concern among the year-round and summer residents and extends fa' beyaxl the
Main Road, to all those who use the Main Road. I have attached tho petition which will remain in
circulation untll this serious situation is addressed, as well as letters from tho local busi~
who are concerned far themselves and their customers.
_Tho North F~k has changed over. the past b~o veers, not.In Its a~, but in its regularity.
There are new ¥1neyards openir~ along the main road and old ones expanding their buSi.._n~ss__, Tho
traffic out here has increased drastically, as anyone who lives on the main road can attest to,
Whon the 55 mph speed limit was instituted, I believe this ~ was considered an open stretch of
highw~. This is no longer the case. If on~ was to accelerate to 55 mph in front of the businesses
that exist today, suraly someone would be killed or serioush/Injured. As is the ~ in reality,
most recently, a young motarcvciiat was seriously in.iured, unfamiliar with the urea, he
accelerated to the speed, su.~nOes_ _t~l by ~ State and sla~nmed into a car that stopped to see the
sights. This urea needs to ho m-evaluated. Not on a nine-to-fi~e work smedule, but on tho
weeker~ md In the summer ~' fall eaeson.
',Ye urge ~ to act expediently on this matter before the fall harvest, when thousands of families
from Long Island and the Tri-Barough area venture out to this ere~ Thank you.
