Speed Limit
Laughing Waters
Southold
We have completed our investigation of the subject location to determine if lowering the speed limit
would significantly improve traffic safety.
Based on our investigation, we will repeal the 35 MPH and establish a 25 MPH speed limit for the
roads in Laughing Waters.
Although we establish speed limits within the Town of Southold, the Town is responsible for the
installation and maintenance of the signs posting these speed limits along Town highways.
Attached for your reference are copies of the ordinance concerning the new regulation.
Very truly yours

Dear Mrs. Terry:
Town Speed Limits - Lau~hin~ Waters~ Southold
Your March 26, 1986 Letter
We have reviewed the Town's request to lower the speed limit in the community
of Laughing Waters. This area is presently included in a 35 MPH area speed
which covers a portion of Southold and the Great Hog Neck Peninsula. The area
of Laughing Waters is~ a residential community and is no different in character
from the residential communities of Cedar Beach and Bayview which are also on
the Great Hog Neck Peninsula. We, therefore, are not recommending that the
Laughing Waters area be separated from the existing 35 MPH area speed limit.
Our inspection of the Laughing Waters area did indicate the need for
additional speed li~[t signing. We feel the Town could provide 35 MPH speed
limit signs on Nokomis Road south of Bay Water Road and south of Hiawatha's
Path for southbound traffic. For northbound traffic on Nokomis Road, a 35 MPH
speed limit sign could be installed north of Minnehaha Boulevard; for
northbound traffic on Hiawatha's Path a 35 MPH sign could be installed north
of Minnehaha Boulevard.
The Town may also consider signing three 90 degree turns in the Laughing Water
community. One curve is where Nokomis Road and Minnehaha Boulevard Join. A
second is on Hiawatha's Path and the third is on Minnehaha Boulevard. If the
Town wished to determine an appropriate warning speed for the placing of a
speed warning panel under the curve warning sign, arrangements may be made
with our office for the police department to borrow a Ball Bank Indicator.
We trust this information is sufficient for the Town Board.
Very truly you~
