Winters Southold Town Police Department Peconic, New York 11958 We the undersigned are residents of Elijahs Lane, Mattituck, New York. We are requesting you to take the necessary steps to reduce the 40 M.P.H. speed limit to 30 M.P.H. on Elijahs Lane from the Main Road (State Route 25) to the MTA Long Island Railroad tracks. The reason for this request is there are presently 25 houses located along this section of Elijahs Lane with 39 children in addition to 50 adults residing there. The 40 M.P.H. speed limit is too fast for this residential neighborhood a 30 M.P.H. speed limit is a safe maximum rate of speed for vehicular traffic ~-in this area. Before someone is in helping us with the proper authorities to have this speed limit reduced to injured, we would appreciate you using your good offices 30 M.P.H. WH[TE COMMISSIONER Mrs. Judith T. Terry Southold Town Clerk Town Hall 53095 Main Road P. O. Box 728 Southold, NY 11971 Dear Mrs. Terry: .~meat for Speed Study EliJah's Lane - Mattituck Manhasset Avenue - Greenport We have ccmpleted the Town's request to study the speeds on the above highways. The 40 MPH speed limit on EliJah's Lane was established in 1981. This was based on existing development along the highway and speed observations. Current observations do not indicate any major changes in the roadside development or the speed observations along the highway. The road is basically straight and entering traffic has good sight distance. Any further reduction in the speed from the existing 40 MPH would in effect create a condition of Iow compliance. We, therefore, feel the current speed limit is appropriate. Manhasset Avenue is within a 35 MPH area speed, which limits the speed on Manhasset Avenue to 35 MPH. The roadway is only three quarters of a mile in length and the 35 MPH speed limit is appropriate for the existing conditions of the area. We, therefore, will not recommend any further reduction in the speed on Manhasset Avenue or within the East Greenport-East Marion area. We do, however, recommend an additional 35 MPH area speed limit sign be installed on Manhasset Avenue just south of Route 25. Thank you for your patience in this matter. To date, I have not had any response to my request. I would again reinstitute the same request so that the matter may be resolved befere the summer season starts. I would also like to request that one o~ your field engineers contact me regarding a severe problem in regard to the parking area for the MAIN STREET SUPERMARKET, Route 25, (100' east of Youngs Ave) Hamlet of Southold. The exiting of supermarket traffic from the one entrance/exit on to Route 25 with limited visibility both east and west is undesirable and hazardous. Perhaps your engineer can come up with a solution which can be implemented and enforced. I would like to see the field trip combined so that both matters may be looked into before the summer traffic starts. Thank you for any expeditious handling of this request. The installation has a curbside stanchiomwith upper and lower flashing yellow lights mounted thereon. There are two install- ations, one for eastbound traffic and one for westbound traffic. I am concerned about the visibility of both units, most particularly the unit for westbound traffic. The roadside, at both points, contains trees which restrict visibility of the lights. The westbound unit is almost obscured now by a large tree --- and this is before the leaves grow out. The curve has been a source of many accidents for years now and I am concerned that the lack of visible warnings may tend to increase, rather than decrease, the hazard. I would appreciate being advised of your investigation in this matter and offer any assistance I can.
