FIREFILM II
DECORATIVE, INTUMESCENT FIREPROOFING FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL
Clean Room Semiconductor, Pharmaceutical,
and Sterile Industrial Facility Use
A/D Fire Protection Systems presents you with the option of a truly thin-film intumescent fireproofing:
A/D FIREFILM® II, for structural steel in clean room and sterile industrial facilities.
A/I) FIREFILM® II is a Decorative, Thin-Film Intumescent
Fireproofing for Structural Steel.
During a fire it expands to form a meringue-like insulating
ash which protects steel from fire for up to 3 hours.
A/D FIREFILM II is the hardest, most resistant to impact
and abrasion and has the highest compressive strength
and adhesion/cohesion values on the market.
A/D FIREFILM® II is Ideal for Applications:
Where structural steel is to remain exposed
Wi-.hin the clean air or secondary air stream
With architectural statements
With clearance issues
Where multiple a~achments are needed
A/D FIREFILM [lin a Class 1 clean room
A/D FIREFILM® II is a Thin-Film, Water Based (0 VOC's), Non Off-Gassing Intumescent Fireproofing.
In its applied state, it gives the appearance of a paint coating over structural steel. The decorative, protective
A/D COLORCOAT® (or other approved topcoat) provides the designer with a virtually unlimited spectrum of
colored finishes. The typical A/D FIREFILM 1I design thickness ranges from 16 mils (0.OI 6 inch) (0.40 mm) to 130 mils
(O. 13 inch) (3.30 mm) to the structural steel members. However, under fire conditions the intumescent coating
expands up to 4 in. thick, providing a fire resistant char around the structural members.
Fire Test Standards and Listings:
A/D FIREFILM IIhas been tested to some of the world's most stringent standards, the ASTM-E119 Fire Endurance
test, as required by all five US model building Codes (UBC, SBCCI, BOCA, IBC, & NFPA) and UL 263 (ASTM-E119
with added environmental and aging testing). A/D FIREFILM II is listed by: Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL), ITS /
Warnock Hersey (WH), Factory Mutual (FM), and ULC. A/D FIREFILM II has additional approvals including City of
Los Angeles Research Report, City Of NewYork MEA Number and others.
Fire Resistance Ratings:
A/D FIREFILM II is the most extensively tested water
based thin-film intumescent fireproofing in North America. A/D
FIREFILM Il has column members tested with UL, ULC, ITS /
Wamock Hersey and Factory Mutual up to 3 hours. We have
listed members with W/D's as small as 0.41 (equivalent to I/8"
steel exposed on one surface) and are not limited to "W"
sections. A/D FIREFILM [I is also tested for tube steel, round,
.square and rectangular sections. A/D FIREFILM I1 has beam,
beam / floor assemblies tested with "W" sections as small as a
W6 x 12 (W/D=0.S I ) from 3/4 thru 2 hours. A/D FIREFILM
II is the only thin-film product listed by UL and ULC with an
alternate thickness equation from 3/4 thru 2 hours.

THE WORLD'S LEADER IN WATER BASED THIN-FILM INTUMESCENT FIREPROOFING
CLEAN ROOM / STERILE FACILITIES: WHY MD FIREFILM® II ?
Specific to integrated circuit fabrication, sterile and hygienic industrial
facilities, nine key factors related to the selection of fire protection
systems are:
Dust free
2) No Off-Gassing from the Materials
3) Ease of Installing Attachments
4) Installation and Life Cycle Costs
5) No Mineral Wool Flute Fill Required
6) Durability
7) Speed of Application and Job Site Friendly
8) Job Site Safety
9) Smooth Finish - Cleaning
Dust Free and Non Off-Gassing:
A/D FIREFILM II provides a fireproofing option for the structural
steel which does not contribute particulate matter into the
environment. Furthermore, by virtue of its water-based formulation,
A/D FIREFILM II does not off-gas after drying.
Ease of Installing Attachments:
In most cases, attachments can be made directly over A/D FIREFILM
II without further treatment, avoiding and / or minimizing the hidden
costs of patch work and time delays. By comparison, drywall and
conventional fireproofing products require removal and repair of
product which will create dust. With drywall and conventional
fireproofing products, attachments are very expensive (usually hidden
costs, generally adding 30 to 40% to the original sub contract) and
time consuming, especially after the building is commissioned. A/D
FIREFILM II allows the owner the ability to add, move, and remove
attachments after the building is in operation.
Attachments directly over A/D FIREFILM H
A/D FIREFILM Il on structural steel
No Mineral Wool Flute Fill
Where fluted metal decks are used over
beams most intumescent fireproofing designs
require the open area between the top of the
beam and the top of the deck to be filled
with mineral wool, Mineral wool is known to
be friable and the absorption of moisture risks
mold growth. A/D FIREFILM II designs do
not require mineral wool fill thus providing a
particulate free product.
.Durability:
A/D FIREFILM II is the hardest interior fireproofing
product on the market with a Shore "D" hardness of
531.8 (a bowling ball has a Shore "D" of I00). It is also
one of the densest with a density of 85 pc[
Speed of Application for Re-Coating and Topcoating
Typically A/D FIREF1LM II is re-coated after drying
overnight and topcoated after 24 hours. Solvent based
inturnescents typically require many days to weeks under
favorable conditions before topcoating. Conventional
fireproofing may take many days under favorable
conditions before sealer coat and topcoat can be applied.
Job Site Safety
A/D FIREFILM II is water based with 0 VOC's unlike
solwmt based products that typically add 2.5 lbs + of
toxic: VOC's per gal. to the immediate environment. With
A/D FIREFILM II other trades can work in the area
during application without the ill effects of toxic solvents.
Gas or propane heaters can be used without the risk
of fire or explosion. A/D FIREFILM II is water clean
up no solvents such as;toluene, MEK, MIBK, xylene, or
paint thinner associated with solvent based intumescent
are required.
Speed of Application and Job Site Friendly
A/D FIREFILM II is easy to appl)~ Most applicators use
off the shelf conventional airless paint equipment. A/D
FIP~EFILM II has proven to be substantially faster to
install than conventional fireproofing. Also, it is more
accommodating of other trades working in the area.
With no solvent odors there is less need to isolate the
application from other trades; a critical consideration,
especially in fast-track construction.
/~D FIREFILM® II allows easy access jot installation and maintenance of service items
Smooth Painted Appearance Allows for Ease of Cleaning
The A/D FIREFILM II system can easily be cleaned "including alcohol
washed" during its service life. The smooth finish allows this to be done
effectively and quickly
Topcoats
Multiple types and brands of topcoats have been tested and approved for use
over A/D FIREFILM II.
Patching
Most fireproofing products are prone to being damaged easily as a result of
other trades working in the area and from attachments to the structural steel
during construction and the life of the building. A/D FIREFILM II requires
only simple preparation and touch up of any damaged areas. We provide dear
and simple patching procedures which allow the owner the flexibility to make
ongoing changes without costly and time consuming disruptions in the
operation of the facilityThe A/D FIREFILM II system easily accommodates
the hanging of equipment from structural members with clamps and bolted
connections to the structure.
Space Savings
The typical A/D FIREFILM II design thickness ranges
fr<)m [ 6 mils (0.0 [ 6 inch) to [ 30 mils (0.13 inch) on
ff~e structural steel members. Unlike drywall and
conventional fireproofing methods, it does not intrude
into valuable room/floor space and column "footprints"
are kept to a minimum size.
Weight Savings
The A/D FIREFILM II system typically weighs less than
0.46 lb. per sq. Pc. This is much less than conventional
fireproofing systems that weigh up to 7.5 lbs. per sq. ft..
This can be a significant factor in the building design and
is usually a hidden costs when doing final calculations of
the overall bearing capacity of the foundation, structural
frame, etc..Typically the foundation, beams, trusses, and
columns are designed to accommodate the heavier
systems. However, this excess load bearing capacity
can be,. reserved for future expansion requirements.

Re:
Addition to Southold Firehouse
5513 Main Road
Southold, NY 11971
Dear Mike,
This is to confirm our phone conversation of January 20, 2003 regardingthe above
application, filed under the old code, as follows:
Building Classification: The total building maximum fire area upon completion of this
project will be 11,600 sf. The entire building will be classified in Use Group 4.2,
Firehouse with assembly space. The construction class of the original structure is 4a,
1989 addition is 2b, and the current addition is 2b. Table V1-705 permits a
maximum fire area of 12,000 sf under either 2b or 4a. Additionally this building is
fully accessible on three sides, allowing a 75% increase to 21,000 sf. Therefore the
building complies for area and class of construction.
2. The addition will be adding two small toilet rooms to the existing sanitary system.
Filing with the Suffolk County Health Department is not required. The relocated pools
on drawing A-1 are all storm drainage. The existing sanitary system is east of the
.,~existing building, not near the new addition.
The Basement Plan shown on drawing A2 is void. The Alternate Basement Plan
shown on drawings 2A and 2B is proposed to be built. This cellar area will be used
~ for storage only. It is provided with two exits as required by code and will have exit
lights and emergency lighting.
4. All exit requirements of the State Building Code for both the existing building and the
new addition have been met,
Schaardt & Fullan, de Silva, Architects PLLC
Page 1
Februa~ 4, 2003
5. In accordance with your review, the following changes will be made:
a. The entire first floor corridor of the addition will be constructed with a 2-hour fire
rating. Doors will be B label. A new 2-hour partition and B label door will be
added between Lobby 120 and Lobby 106.
b. A new 2 hr partition and B label door will be added separating the Second Floor
Lobby 208 from the Stair.
c. The vanity counter in Room 212 will be reduced to provide 5 feet clear at the
water closet as per ADA.
d. The roof deck for the addition will be changed to non-combustible metal.
The Fire District and I really appreciate your prompt attention to this application. Your
review was most helpful. Please contact me if you have any further concerns.
Sincerely,
Paul de Silva

4. Outdoor air supply and exhaust systems must have motorized dampers that automatically shut when the systems
or spaces served are not in use. Dampers must be capable of automatically shutting offduring preoccupancy
building warm-up, cool-dom, and setback, except when ventilation reduces energy costs (e.g., night purge) or
when ventilation must be supplied to meet code requirements. Both outdoor air supply and exhaust air dampers
must have a maximum leakage rate of 3 cfm/fi2 at 1.0 in w.g. when tested in accordance with AMCA Standard
500.
- Exception: Gravity (non-motorized) dampers are acceptable in buildings less than three stories in height.
- Exception: Systems with a design outside air intake or exhaust capacity of 300 cfm (140 Us) or less that are
equipped with motor operated dampers that open and close when the unit is energized and de-energized,
respectively.
Requirements Specific To: Plant 1
1. The specified heating and/or cooling equipment is covered by New York State Energy Conservation Code and
must meet the following minimum efficiency: Condensing Unit: 9.9 COP, 11.0 IPLV
2. The specified heating equipment is covered by Federal minimum efficiency requirements. New equipment of
this type can be assumed to meet or exceed New York State Energy Conservation Code requirements for
equipment eff~ciency, Used equipment must meet 83% Et ~ maximum capacity.
3. Systems with multiple boilers have automatic controls capable of sequencing the operation of the boilers.
4. Hydronic heating systems comprised of a single boiler and >500 kBtu/h input design capacity include either a
multistaged or modulating burner.
Requirements Specific To: Water Heating 1
1. Piping for the specified circulating service hot water system must be insulated with a minimum of l-in.
insulation having a conductivity no >0.28 Bm.in/(h. fi2.°F).
2. Circulating service hot water systems must have a time switch control that can automatically turn off the system
during unoccupied hours,
Generic Requirements: Must be met by all systems to which the requirement is applicable
1. Design heating and cooling loads for the building must be determined using procedures equivalent to those in
Chapters 27 and 28 of the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals or an approved equivalent calculation
procedure.
2. All equipment and systems must be sized to be no greater than needed to meet calculated loads. A single piece
of equipment providing both heating and cooling must satisfy this provision for one function with the capacity
for thc other function as small as possible, within available equipment options.
- Exception: The equipment and/or system capacity may be greater than calculated loads for standby
purposes. Standby equipment must be automatically controlled to be off when the prima~y equipment and/or
system is operating.
- Exception: Multiple units of the same equipment type whose combined capacities exceed the calculated load
are allowed if they are provided with controls to sequence operation of the units as the load increases or
decreases.
3. Each heating or cooling system serving a single zone must have its own temperature control device.
tem'~nal devices, and supply air diffusers.
15. Hot water distribution systems with total system capacities of 600 kBtu/h and greater must have controls that:a)
automatically reset the hot water supply temperature, based on heating load, by at least 25% of the design

Appliance Energy Conservation Act and the Energy Policy Act of 1992, which meet or exceed New York State
Energy Conservation Code. New service water heating equipment can be assumed to meet these requirements.
17. Water-heating equipment must be provided with controls that allow the user to set the water temperature to 110
°F for dwelling units and 90 °F for other occupancies. Controls must limit output temperatures of lavatories in
public facility restrooms to 110 °F.
18. Hot water space-heating systems with a capacity exceeding 300 kBtu/h supplying heated water to comfort
conditioning systems must include controls that automatically reset supply water temperatures by representative
building loads (including return water temperature) or by outside air temperature.
Exceptions:
- Where the supply temperature reset controls cannot be implemented without causing improper operation of
heating, cooling, humidification, or dehumidification systems.
- Hydronic systems that use variable flow to reduce pumping energy.
19. Stair and elevator shaft vents must be equipped with motorized dampers capable of being automatically clused
during normal building operation and interlocked to open as required by fire and smoke detection systems. All
gravity outdoor air supply and exhaust hoods, vents, and ventilators must be equipped with motorized dampers
that will automatically shut when the spaces served are not in use.
Exceptions:
- Gravity (non-motorized) dampers are acceptable in buildings less than three stories in height above grade.
- Ventilation systems serving unconditioned spaces.
20. Individual fan systems with a design supply air capacity of 5000 cfra or greater and minimum outside air supply
of 70% or greater of the supply air capacity must have an energy recovery system with at least a 50%
effectiveness.
Exceptions:
- Systems serving spaces that are not cooled and heated to <60 °F.
- Commercial kitchen hoods (grease) classified as Type I by NFPA 96
- Systems exhausting toxic, flammable, paint, or corrosive fumes or dust
If an air economizer is also required, heat recovery must be bypassed or controlled to permit air economizer
operation.
2 I. Individual kitchen exhaust hoods larger than 5000 cfm must be provided with make-up air sized for at least 50%
of exhaust air volume that is uncooled and either unheated or heated to no more than 60 °F
Exceptions:
- Where hoods are used to exhaust ventilation air that would otherwise exfiltrate or be exhausted by other Can
systems.
- Certified grease extractor hoods that require a face velocity no >60 fpm.
22. Buildings with fume hood systems having a total exhaust rate >15,000 cfm must either have variable air volume
hood design, exhaust air heat recovery, or separate make up air supply.

Southold, NY 11971
Dear Mike,
This is to confirm our phone conversation of January 20, 2003 regarding the above
application, filed under the old code, as follows:
1. Building Classification: The total building maximum fire area upon completion of this
project will be 11,600 sr. The entire building will be classified in Use Group 4.2,
Firehouse with assembly space. The construction class of the original structure is 4a,
1989 addition is 2b, and the current addition is 2b. Table VI-705 permits a
maximum fire area of 12,000 sf under either 2b or 4a.
The existinA sanitary system is east of the
existing building, not near the new addition. ~'-~--:-f~
3. The Basement Plan shown on drawing A2 is void. The Alternate Basement Plan
shown on drawings 2A and 2B is proposed to be built. This cellar area will be used
for storage only. It is provided with two exits as required by code and will have exit
lights and emergency lighting.
4. All exit requirements of the State Building Code for both the existing building and the
new addition have been met.

5. In accordance with your review, the following changes will be made:
a. The entire first floor corridor of the addition will be constructed with a 2-hour fire
rating. Doors will be B label. A new 2-hour partition and B label door will be
added between Lobby 120 and Lobby :[06.
b. A new 2 hr partition and B label door will be added separating the Second Floor
Lobby 208 from the Stair.
c. The vanity counter in Room 212 will be reduced to provide 5 feet clear at the
water closet as per ADA,
d. The roof deck for the addition will be changed to non-combustible metal.
The Fire District and I really appreciate your prompt attention to this application. Your
review was most helpful. Please contact me if you have any further concerns.
