5: Secure each connection by inserting a Tek screw into the side of the arch.
Tip: Tek screws are self-drilling and no pilot hole is usually required. If you have trouble
getting a Tek screw to "bite," try another Tek screw (or you can drill a 3116" pilot hole).
n
Step 6: Repeat the steps above to assemble the other end rafter using the same procedures.
End rafters use Purlin End Clamps and Brace Bands. You will add these fittings now:
Step 7: Slide 4 sets of Purlin End Clamps onto one of the rafters. These will be be used to secure
the purlins to the end rafter. Turn them as required to get past the Tek screws at the joints.
You'll need one at each joint in the rafter.

h
T 1 Y.;'WM•
Tip: On the sides of the rafter, position the top strap of the end clamp so it rests on the Tek
screw. This will help prevent the clamp from slipping if the purlin has to support any weight.
Page 8
4 .
8: Slide a 1.66" Brace Band over each end of the rafter and up the rafter a few feet. These will
be used to secure the struts.
#ep 9: Slide another set of Purlin End Clamps onto each end of the rafter. These will be be used at
the lower ends of the rafter and will "trap" the brace bands so they can't fall off. The clamp
should be about 2" away from the end of the rafter to leave room for the "T" connector which
will be added later. You should now have a total of 6 sets of end clamps on your rafter.
Lower Position (with puriin installed)
Step 10: Repeat the steps above to assemble the other end rafter exactly like the one you just
made.
The rest of your rafters will be used on the inside of your shelter. You'll make these rafters now.
Step 11: On all inside rafters, install Purlin Cross Clamps at the same locations where you installed
end clamps on the end rafters. Leave the screws loose so you can slide in the purlins later on.
This model has 6 clamps per rafter. Inside rafters do NOT have "T" connectors or brace bands.
Typical Cross Clamp Assembly
Tip: On the sides of the rafter, position the top strap of the cross clamp assembly so it rests on
the Tek screw. This will help prevent the clamp from slipping if the puriin supports any weight.
uqylxmn iQ
top 1: Stand up one of your end rafters (one of those with the brace bands attached). Secure it to
an existing structure if possible so that it is plumb. If you don't have an existing structure, you
can use some 2x4s as shown tied with rope:
l
l
Step 2: Insert purlins into the clamps at the bottoms of the end rafter and tighten the clamps.
The ends of the purlins should extend a half inch or less past the clamp, or the rough end of
the pudin could damage the cover when it is installed later. Note that the bolt side of the end
clamps must go toward the "inside" of the shelter" (the same side as the pudin) as shown.
1
Hz
Step 3: Slide an inside rafter (without brace bands) onto the two purlins. Position this 2nd rafter from
the end rafter using a rafter-to-rafter distance of 48". Have your partner hold the rafter in
position while you tighten the purlin clamps at the ends of this rafter.
Step 4: Slide a puffin through the clamp at the top of this rafter and also the clamp at the top of the
end rafter. Tighten the bolts with the end of the purlin a half inch past the clamp.
E3-- . 4A
one at a time, slide purlins through the rest of the clamps and tighten the bolts with the
ends of the purlins a half inch past the edges of the clamps on the end rafter.
PURLINS RAFTERS
6RACJE BAND
Step 6: After you have installed the first two rafters, slide a 1.315" brace band onto each of the two
bottom purlins (before you go on to attach the'third rafter).
Step 7: Using 1-1/2" carriage bolts and nuts, attach struts between the brace bands on the purlins
and the brace bands on the end rafter. Position the struts so that they form a triangle at roughly
a 45° angle when installed. Make sure the end rafter is plumb before you tighten the nuts.
K,*
Tip: If you forgot to slide a brace band into position on a rafter or pudin, you can wedge the
brace band onto the pipe by striking it with a mallet. Be careful, and wear eye protectionf
You can then reclose the end of the brace band by pinching it with slip joint pliers if necessary.
Page 11
ep 8: Continue adding rafters (at 48" spacing) and purlins until all inside rafters are in place
between the two end rafters. Remember to use the other end rafter last.
M •1 L _
'
Step 9: Using 1-1/2" carriage bolts and nuts, attach struts between the end rafter just installed and
bottom purlins as you did at the other end of the frame.
Step 10: With all rafters and pudins in place, position the shelter exactly where you want it located.
Step 11: Recheck the 48" rafter-to-rafter dimensions along all six purlins. Also check that every
rafter is standing up straight (plumb). Square the comers by measuring diagonally comer-to-
comer, and line up all rafters using a straight line.

Step 2: Apply two layers of heavy duct tape on all pipe connections/clamps that contact the cover.
Section • • the Shelter
ClearSpanTM offers three different anchoring systems, and you must use one of these systems to
anchor your shelter at this time. Anchoring systems are designed to ensure that your shelter is
anchored safely and securely. While earth auger anchors are included with your shelter kit, the type
of anchor system used with your shelter should be selected based on the type of surface to which
you are securing your shelter. It is recommended that you place one anchor at every rafter on both
sides of your building.
E
. _ r:
,ype 1 : Earth Auger Anchor assembly (INCLUDED)
rncludes a 30" Earth Auger Anchor, a 6" Turnbuckle and a securing Clamp Band Assembly.
Step1: Place 1 Earth Auger Anchor, 1 Turnbuckle, and 1 Clamp Band Assembly (including 1 nut
and 1 bolt) where they will be installed.
Step2: Screw the Earth Auger Anchor into the ground approximately 20"-26", making sure the eye of
the Auger is within 7"-8" of the rafter to which it will be attached.
Note: The placement of the Earth Auger Anchor is not critical, as long as the Turnbuckle will
reach from the Anchor to the rafter it will be supporting.
Step 3: Unscrew the "hook" and the "eye" ends of the Turnbuckle to lengthen it approximately
halfway.Attach the "hook" of the Turnbuckle through the "eye" of the Earth Auger Anchor.
Step 4: Spread the Clamp Band and place around the rafter. Squeeze the Clamp Band back togeth-
er and place the "eye" of the Turnbuckle in the Clamp Band opening and secure with the bolt
and nut. Slide Clamp Band as high up the rafter as it will go, then tighten the nut on the bolt.
Step 5: Insert a Tek screw into the rafter just"below the band clamp. This will prevent the band
clamp from slipping down as the turnbuckle is tightened.
Step 6: Tum Turnbuckle until taut.
Type 2: Shelter Bracket (OPTIONAL)
for shelters on cement pads / blocks
Includes a Bracket and a 5-1/2" Cement Wedge Anchor.
Step 1: Place a Bracket and a Cement Wedge Anchor next to each rafter end.
Step 2: Place the Bracket over the bottom purlin and mark the center of the hole in the Bracket on
the cement. Purlins may be adjusted up or down for a perfect fit.
Step 3: Drill hole in the cement at least 4-1/2" deep.
Step 4: Place Wedge Anchor into hole, then fit Bracket over bottom purlin and threaded portion of
Wedge Anchor. Secure Wedge Anchor with nut and washer.
Type 3: Duck Bill Earth Anchors (OPTIONAL)
Includes a complete assembly plus U-bolt assembly.
Step 1: Place a Duck Bill Earth Anchor next to each side of all rafters.
Step 2: Using a drive steel, drive the Duck Bill into the ground, making sure the threaded portion
attached to the cable is resting next to the rafter with the end of the threaded rod facing up.
Step 3: Secure threaded portion to rafter with U-bolt and tighten nuts securely.

ends of the end rafter fully into the "T" connectors at the ends of the end conduit. Tighten the
allen screws to secure the connectors to the conduit.
Note: End panel material is not shown in the photo so you can see the connector assembly.
Step 11: Securely attach a rope to the exposed end of the vertical conduit, and throw it up and over
the end rafter.
Step 12: Using the rope, carefully hoist the vertical conduit up into position.
WARNING: Do NOT let anyone stand under the conduit as you perform this step as they
could be injured if the conduit falls.

DO NOT INSTALL END PANELS ON A WINDY DAY AS DAMAGE TO THEM MAY RESULTI
Step 1: Locate the zippered end panel, end conduit sections, and 5 cast "T" connectors.
NOTE: If the hem of your end panel has not been notched out, follow the procedure below.
Step 2: Lay the zippered end panel out on a clean flat surface.
Tip: Lay a few pieces of wood on your panel to prevent a breeze from getting under it.
Step 3:Assemble another set of end conduit sections the width of your shelter (three 8' swaged and
a 2' unswaged), slide 3 "T" connectors to the middle, and add a "T" connector at each end as
shown below. The length should match the width of your shelter. Do NOT tighten the alien bolts
on the "T" connectors at this time as you will need to remove them shortly!
Step 4: Place the end conduit assembly centered side-to-side on top of the hem of the end panel.
Step 5: Slide the middle "T" connector to the center of the conduit assembly, and slide the other two
"T" connectors to coincide with the pockets just outside each door zipper where the vertical
supports will be located.
Step 6: With scissors, trim the corners, middle, and vertical support positions of the end panels as
required so the cast "T" connectors will be exposed when the tubing is placed inside the hem.
Step 7: Remove one end "T" connector and the three "T" connectors in the middle and slide the
end conduit assembly into the hem at the bottom of the end panel. Insert the end conduit
through the side and middle portions of the end panel only and not through the door sections.

Long shelters require additional ropes at every rafter where you installed a ratchet. If your
cover's hem was notched at the factory, you can attach additional ropes at these locations. If
your cover was not notched at the factory, you can cut a small slit in the hem just inside of the
cover conduit (see photos on next page), pass the rope through and tie a bowline knot.

Step 9: Throw the ropes up and over the frame and then pull the cover over the frame. You need
one person at each rope for this step.

Dig6 Remove one end conduit connector and the "T" in the middle. Slide the end conduit
assembly into the hem at the bottom of the end panel. Replace the connectors you removed
during this process. Add the middle "T" (pointing UP and with the alien screws exposed) as you
slide the conduit through the hem as it can not be added later. You will also have to insert a Tek
screw into each joint. This must be done just after you slide the joint nearest the middle "T"
connector past the connector. Other joints can be secured before sliding-in the conduit.

Step 7: Fit together an 8' swaged pipe and a 54" unswaged pipe to make an assembly the height
of your shelter. Secure the joint with a Tek screw.
Stop 8, From the opening on the curved side, slide the vertical conduit down through the pocket and
into the "T" connector at the middle of the end conduit. Tighten the upper alien screw ONLY in
the "T" connector to secure the vertical conduit. Note that the Tek screw securing the conduit
joint should not be a position to contact the end panel material. If it is, loosen the "T" connector,
rotate the vertical conduit, and then retighten the alien screw in the "T" connector.
Step 9: Using scissors, trim the pocket material (not the end panel material) to expose the "top" end
of the vertical conduit as shown below. You can either cut the flap off or simply tuck it in as
shown below.
0: Place the end panel assembly in position at the end of your shelter and insert the bottom
ends of the end rafter fully into the wr connectors at the ends of the end conduit. Tighten the
ailen screws to secure the connectors to the conduit.
