Of Jam6sport, New. York~ for Department of. the Army approval of'the~construct ion of jetties.and dolphins and dredging in Long Island Sound at Jamesport, Suffolk County, New York, and W~LEREAS, the site of the~wozk is located within-1500 feet of the westerly boundary, line of .the Town of Southold and accordingly is of condern~to the T~w~ of Sou~hetd and the ,inhabita'nts thereof, and. WHEREAS', after investigation th~s board has concluded that the wOrk~-con~ templated by Levon Properties Corporation~ will adversely affect the inter- ests of t-he Town of Southold and cause znjury to property withi~ the Town of .Southol~ and. will'also adversely affect the fresh water reso6rses of the Town of Southold, ~ NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That' this Board does hereby oppose: the gran't-ing~'of ~he application of Levon-'Properties .Corporation for the con- struction andldredgzng set forth in sai'd Public Notice NO. 6501, th~reasons for ~ch opposition being as follows, to wit: (A) The construction 'of jetties and structures into the~waters of Long Island Sound will cause serious erosion~ of~ the .shorline lying to the east. o~ the site and within the boundaries of the Town.of Southold. 'The inevitability of such erosion is evident by the conditions presently existing and caused by the jetties and structures constructed by Le~on Properties Corporation at the site within the past several years..The~ .. -threat~of .~urther~shore~ine erosion is ~lso based upon observed erosion of the ;shO~el'ine.on Long Island Sound caused by othe~ jetties sim;ila'r to tho~e p~oposedl by-'~t~he applicant in other locations. (B) The p~esent sand and gravel operations conducted by Levon Properties~Corpo~ation at the Jamesport site has resulted in spillage-of clay and othe~ materials into the waters of Long Island Sound. Such ,spill- age has drefted easterly along the shoreline and caused a pollution of the beaches in the Town of Southold. An extension of the jetties further lnto-LQ~g' Island Sound will cause further destruction of' the beaches in th~ Town of Southold by reaS'on of such spillage. (C~ The cohstruct~on and dredging operations contemplated by Levon Properties Corporation will adversely affect the fresh water re- sourses~ of the Town of Southold. The largest available fresh water supplies of the Town of Southold are located in the westerly areas of the Town of Southold within a few thousand feet of the apPlicant's construction site. Recent engineering studies conducted by the Town of Southold have indic- iated t~at the dredging of waterways will cause contamination of the fresh water resourses of the Town of Southold by reason Of salt water intrusion and will also cause the fresh water resourses to flow into the waters of Long Island Sound thereby de~letinq such water resourses.
