I think it would be foolish to take the 700~ of road frontage on Tabor Road and put my business on it. I think that road frontage should have been available for retail business~ rather than to use it up for my tp]~e of operation which does not need that access. We would rather be a little out of the way. Of course we wouldn't want to be way out on Narrow River Road or anyplace like that where we would have trouble getting the trailers in and out. THE CHAIRMAN: Would you list for the' record the other places that you sought to acquire for this purpose? MR. SCHRIEVER: Well~ the first place that we sought to acquire was what used to be Ed King's grading barn~ which is in back of his apartments. That property was zoned "B" BUsiness. I attempted to buy the prope~ty~ I was offered a contract to buy the property at a prive which was quite high due to the fact that it was ~he only available business property in Orient. The building on it would have been of no use to me it would have had to be torn down. THE CHAIRMAN: Wasn't that property re-zoned? MRo~ SCHRIEVER: Yesa it was re-zoned to "A" on petition of several of the property owners in that area who wanted to block my obtaining the use of the property. THE CHAIRMAN: W~at other locations did you try to obtain? MR. SCHRIEVER: None~ not for this business° But previous to that I wanted to build a garage for Civil Defense Equipment and the property was zoned "B" Business~ but there was opposition to it. THE CHAIRMAN: Were there any other places? MRS. SCHRIEVER: You were going to try to buy the property behind Joe's Garage~ but then somebody else bought it. The application is unique in view of the lack of adequate business property available. HARRY MITCHELL: Just a directional sign. THE CHAIRMAN: A 4~x6~ off premises directional sign is what is permitted for your type of business. Do you consider your marina a seperate operation or part of the overall operation? HARRY MITCHELL: I consider it part of the over all operation. THE CHAIRMAN: Then 4'~x6t would be the size sign that you are permitted~ a directional or informational sign~ gi~ing directions and saying that it is a place to eat and sleep. The sign has to be 5 feet from any property line, and the bottom of the sign has to be 3 feet above the ground. PUBLIC H~J~RING: Appeal NOo 1256 - $ 2 - for a special exception in accordance with the Zoning Ordinance, Article IV,~ Section 408, Subsection (a)~, for permission to erect an off premises directional sign. Location of property: land of Julia Wickham, north side of Main Road~ Greenport, New York~ bounded north by Catherine Cassidy~ east by Albertson Lane~ south by Main Roa~ west by Catherine Cassidy. Fee paid $5.00. The chairman opened the hearing by reading the application for a special exception~ legal notice of hearing~ affidavit attesting to its publication in the official newspaper, and notice to the applicant. The Chairman read letter of permission from the property owner~ THE CHAIRMA~I: The s~ne restrictions will apply to this sign as do to the preceding sign. THE CHAIRMAN: Is there anyone present who wishes to speak against this application? (There was no response.) After investigation and inspection the Board finds that the applicant requests permission to erect directional signs in two seperate locations. The applicant has a letter of permission from the property owner in regard to both sign locations. These signs are directional only to a marina and restaurant~ owned by the applicant, located in Greenport. These signs are in the interest of t~e travelling public.
