NY 1 'i 768 PHONE: (63~) 262-- 9702 FAX: (631 ) ~'54 - 3733 Wetland Restoration Plan & Retaining Wall Installation Joan La Caille Existing Site Conditions: The proposed project site is located at 1255 Watervlew Drive in Southold, NY along Goose Creek. The tidal range at the site is approximately 2V2 to 3 feet. The site has a northern aspect to the creek and is subject to continuous low to moderate level of wind and wave action along the shoreline. Over time, the applicant's shoreline bank has begun to erode through undermining of the high marsh areas along the perimeter of the property. As a consequence, these once protection high marsh areas along the shoreline bank have begun to break off into the upper littoral zones of the creek causing further erosion. Currently, the depth of undermining ranges fi.om 0.5 feet to 1.5 feet. Seasonally, freezing and thawing of ice sheets within the creek during cold winter months further exacerbates this problem. Proiect Desi-n: The stabilization of the project site will incorporate both vegetative plantings with erosion control blankets and a low retaining wall installation along the eroding bank. The wooden retaining wall will be installed at the toe of the shoreline bank and extent to approximately MHW elevation. Open pockets and undermined bank areas immediately landward of the retaining wall will be back-filled with on-site sandy materials. Any un-vegetated areas will be replanted with coastal grasses and shrubs native to the site. Below the retaining wall, the once existing high marsh will be restored. This will involve the installation of an erosion control blankets to prevent surface scour and erosion during marsh establishment. Approximately 600, 2" peat plugs of Spartina altemiflora (smooth cordgrass) plugs will be installed on I foot spacing and offcentered rows. The marsh planting area will range in width fi.om 6 to 7 feet along the western and eastern most ends of the site to a maximum width of 12 feet towards the center of the site with a total length of approximately 70 feet.
