Dear Ms. Wickham:
The following action was taken by the Board of Town Trustees during its regular meeting held
on Wednesday, December 20,2000 regarding the above matter:
WHEREAS, Abigail Wickham, Esq. on behalf of the MATTITUCK PARK DISTRICT applied
to the Southold Town Trustees for a permit under the provisions of the Wetland Ordinance of the
Town of Southold, application dated November 3, 2000, and
WHEREAS, said application was referred to the Southold Town Conservation Advisory Council
for their findings and recommendations, and,
WHEREAS, a Public Hearing was held by the Town Trustees with respect to said application on
December 20, 2000 at which time all interested persons were given an opportunity to be heard,
and,
WHEREAS, the Board members have personally viewed and are familiar with the premises in
question and the surrounding area, and,
WHEREAS, the Board has considered all the testimony and documentation submitted
concerning this application, and,
WHEREAS, the structure complies with the standards set forth in Chapter 97 of the Southold
Town Code,
WHEREAS, the Board has determined that the project as proposed will not affect the health,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT,
RESOLVED, that the Board of Trustees approve the application of the MA TTITUCK PARK
DISTRICT to construct a retaining wall, 83 Yz linear ft. at 2 Yz' high and 36' of benches.
Removal of existing 48 Yz' linear ft. at western end.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this determination should not be considered a determination
made for any other Department or Agency which may also have an application pending for the
same or similar project.
Permit to construct and complete project will expire two years ITom the date it is signed. Fees
must be paid, if applicable, and permit issued within six months of the date of this notification.
Two inspections are required and the Trustees are to be notified upon completion of said project.

To whom it may concern;
I was sad to learn in the newspaper that there was objection to the work being done
by the Mattituck Park Dept. at Wolf Pitt Pond as I feel partially responsible, in a
positive way, for alerting the Parks Dept. many years ago (perhaps six years) that
The pond was apparently in danger oflosing much of the wildlife which lived in on
And around the pond in an abundant fashion when I built my house overlooking the
pond in the early 1990's.
There are now, thanks to the Parks Department continuing efforts over the last five
years, more birds of a variety of species,more turtles and fish in the water than ever
before. There is little to none of the tall marsh grasses growing out of the water in the
middle of the pond, which threatened to take over entirely.
Although, I am sure the problem is oot entirely solved there is definitely less run-
Off ITom the adjacent farms in heavy rains due to the ( incomplete) culvert .
I am not aware ofthe procedures which were followed , however I do recall that
The parks department was hopelessly deadlocked by an assortment of bureaucracies
while the pond rapidly degenerated. The Town agencies were apparently incapable
Of any action whatsoever. Now, everybody is a critic.
The new bulkhead is not a structure of intrinsic beauty, however, with some minor
Planting and planning, within a very short period oftime, nature can be helped in
reclaiming its supremacy over the pond banks. A landscape design of modest scope
Could render the bulkhead totally invisible.
I feel therefore that the initial negativity toward the bulkhead around the pond is
reactionary, and as is often the case with strong negative criticism it is more about
People just wanting to be heard ,rather than about any constructive alternative to the
action undertaken.
For the past several years the overall direction of the Wolf Pitt Park has been positive.
I do not believe the Parks Department should be discouraged entirely ITom continuing
their efforts.

Dear Mr. Elgut:
Thank you for sending me a copy of the fully executed Order on Consent. We never
received the original Order you sent on September 30, 2002, which is why I wrote to you
on October 18, 2002 and again in November to inquire as to its whereabouts. The
District will endeavor to complete the work within 60 days of September 30, 2002.
However, not having received the Order until this week, the scheduling will be difficult,
and if additional time is required, I will send you a status report by the end of the month.
They will attempt to commence removal of the wall later this week or early next.

Dear Albert:
At the request of your secretary, Lauren, I would like to synopsize what exactly
oCCllfTed at Wolf Pit Lake.
Approximately three weeks ugo our staff began to clean up thc bushes that had
gTown up on the edge of the Lake for the sole purpose of allowing access to the J .ake
during the Fall and Winter seasons when the 1.ake is used by sightseers and skaters. 11
became a problem coning down thc high brush necessitating the use of our front load
tractor. During this process we found that the drainage pipe which leads through from
Wickham Avenue into the Lake waS silted up. This was caused by the fact that the pipe
was [00 short and was partially damaged. To repair the pipe our crew needed to create a
drivc-thru which made a ledge and which became a safety factor for drivers parking
he tween the lowland area and the road.
At this time we have constructed a wan made Oul of wood approximately eight
inches to 11 toot to the existing ledge nmning the distance or same and will put tie backs
from the 4 x 4 construction so that the device will remain in place.
We are anticipating a small walkway above the planks so as to strengthen the wall
and possibly pennit wheel chair access to view the Lake. We have no intentions or going
any furthcr with the project except to den! with the drainage pipe. Any comments or
suggestions from your oftïce would be appreciated and may be faxed to the Park Distncl
omce at 298~ 1136.
