Project Description
Maricuiture Technologies, Inc. has undertaken its third season of a Finfish Aquaculture
Project involving the growth of summer flounder within a network of offshore net cages
in Gardiner's Bay, off of the south shore of Plum Island. There are currently four net
cages within the network, of which two of the four are stocked with juvenile flounder.
The flounder are fed several times per day and will eventually be harvested for processing
and/or marketing. In order to undertake this project, the New York State Depathnent of
Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) requires that Mariculture Technologies comply
with a SPDES (State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) monitoring program. The
monitoring program, supervised by Cameron Engineering & Associates, LLP, operating
under SPDES Permit No. NY-0226726, involves the collection of samples from the water
column on a twice per month basis. Sampling will be performed during July, August, and
September with one preliminary ambient water quality sampling session performed in May
before the deployment of any fish. Samples are taken from the bottom (one meter above
the sea floor), middle (half depth), and top (one meter below the surface) of the water
column at 15 different sampling locations. Sample locations are discussed in detail in
section C of this report. Field sampling parameters are pH, Dissolved Oxygen,
Temperature, and Salinity. Samples are collected for Phosphorus, Ammonia, Nitrogen,
and Chlorophyll A analyses by contracted laboratories. The sampling equipment used in
the field is discussed in detail in section B of this report. The contracted laboratories are
Ecotest Laboratories, Inc. of North Babylon (Phosphorus, Ammonia, and Nitrogen) and
Cosper Environmental Services of Bohemia (Chlorophyll A).
Sample Equipment and Procedures
1. Boat
All field sampling is performed from a chartered boat provided by Mariculture
Technologies, Inc. The boat is a 24' fiberglass cuddy cabin manufactured by "Romarine",
powered by a 200 hp Mariner motor. Staff on board the boat is summarized with the
sample data provided in section D of this report.

The pH meter used in the field is a SPER Scientific Model 840035 pH meter with
automatic temperature adjustment. The pH meter is calibrated before each field sampling
session by using a standard solution with a known pH of 7.0 and a standard solution with
a known pH of 4.0. pH sampling is performed by placing the pH meter probe into a
sample container filled with water from the water column sample location. The value on
the pH meter is then read and recorded for each sample location. The sample container
is rinsed with a portion of sample before each reading m prevent contamination from
previous sample collections.
3. Dissolved Oxygen
The Dissolved Oxygen meter used in the field is an Oxyguard Handy Beta STD 9960 D.O.
meter with measurement capabilities of parts per million, % saturation, and water
temperature in degrees Celsius. Calibration of the D.O. meter is performed prior to each
sample session by entering the % saturation value corresponding to the salinity of the water
column. Dissolved Oxygen measurements are taken at each sample location by attaching
the D.O. probe to the Niskin sample bottle and recording the dissolved oxygen in parts per
million (rog/l). Water temperature readings are taken simultaneously with the D.O. meter.
4. Temperature
As discussed previously, temperature readings are read and recorded using the temperature
measuring capabilities of the D.O. probe. Measurements are taken at each sample
location.
5. Salini _ty
The salinity meter used in the field is an Aquatic Eco-Systems, Inc. Optical Salinometer
Model No. 9612 capable of measuring salinity in parts per thousand. Calibration of the
salinometer is performed prior to each sample session by using a sample of distilled water
and adjusting the salinity setting to zero. Salinity measurements are then taken at each
sample location using the sample Container discussed previously with the pH meter. The
value on the salinometer is then read and recorded for each sample location. As mentioned

in the pH meter discussion, the sample container is rinsed with a portion of sample before
each reading to prevent contamination from previous sample locations. The salinometer
is rinsed with distilled water and cleaned with a "kim-wipe" between each reading.
6. Sample Collection
Collection of the water samples for Ammonia, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Chlorophyll A
is performed using a Niskin Non-metallic water sampling bottle, General Oceanics, Inc.
Model No. 1010 having a capacity of 1.7 liters. The sample boule is attached to a Scotty
Downrigger by means of a stainless steel cable for lowering and raising of the sample
bottle. A 3 pound weight is attached to the bottom of the sample bottle in order to stabilize
the boule during times of excessive currents. The downrigger is equipped with a digital
counter for determining the depth of the Niskin bottle. The sample bottle is lowered to the
appropriate depth (measured to the midpoint of the sample bottle) for each sample location
at which time a messenger is released along the downrigger cable in order to close the
sample bottle and capture the sample at the desired depth. The sample is then raised to the
surface by the downrigger and collected in sample bottles provided by the contracted
laboratories. Sample types and locations are discussed in detail in section C of this report.
Sample Locations
The following Table ! summarizes the sample point locations in the vicinity of the net
pens. Table 2 summarizes the sample parameters to be taken at each location. For each
sample taken, the depth and time are recorded to further identify the sample location and
coordinate readings with local tides. Tables 3 and 4 attached to this report present local
tide information for each day that sampling was performed. Site tides occur approximately
15 minutes before times shown on the tide tables for Plum Gut.

The fixed sampling locations represent the border of the leased underwater property and
will remain constant throughout the entire sampling program. The rotating sampling
locations are located based on the projected number of fish in each cage. Figure 1,
attached to this report, presents a site plan showing the general area of the project and the
coordinates of the fixed sample locations. Figure 2, attached to this report, presents a
configuration plan showing the rotating sample locations used for the sampling events
during the month of July. Table 5, attached to this report, summarizes the number and
size of fish in each cage during the month of July.

Sample Data
Sampling results are presented in Tables 6 through 9 of this report. Table 6 summarizes
the data collected for the entire month of July. Bold values indicate the data to be reported
on the Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) required by the SPDES permit. In addition,
monthly minimum, maximum, and average values are presented to further assist in the
monitoring of the site. Tables 7 and 8 present the raw data recorded from sampling
performed on July 15, 1999 and July 20, 1999, respectively. The field results and the
laboratory results from each contracted laboratory are presented in these tables. Table 9
presents the data from the May 20, 1999 baseline sampling, which was performed before
the deployment of any fish into the net cages.
