HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This large house' is a good example of one type :of country house built on the east end of Fishers Island. 'These estates reflect various design trends that were popular during the first part of the 20th century. Many, as seen in this example, incorporate landscape designs that complement the naturalistic qualities of the house. During the era of American country house architecture in the early part of this century, the design of the landscape was equally important as the design of the house. On Fishers Island, these country houses retain a great deal of historic landscape design. 21. SOURCES: Interview, Mrs. Thomas W. Russell Jr. , 8/1.987.
