COUNTY: Suffolk TOWN/CITY: Southold VILLAGE: Fishers Island 3. DESCRIPTION: Located at the west end of Fishers Island, in a low- medium density, residential area. The shops line Equestrian Ave. , opposite a green "triangle" bounded by Atholl Crescent and Alpine Ave. , site of the Post Office/Utility Co. Building (WE-20A). This is the only group of such commercial structures on the island, totaling less than a dozen buildings. The circled buildings on the accompanying NYS DOT New London quad map constitute this district. 4. SIGNIFICANCE: These buildings reflect the unique character of Fishers Island. Originally a private estate, small parcels were sold off in the third quarter of the 19th century. Some of these retail buildings have evolved from that period. LOCAL ATTITUDES TOWARD THE AREA: Most residents ferry to New London for goods and services not found on Fishers Island. Generally, this is part of living on Fishers Island and is not thought of as an inconvenience.
