Predominantly open surroundings at the perimeters of this group. 18. OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES OF BUILDING AND SITE (including interior features if known): 1 story, hip roof, rectangular building with porch across the center section of the north (main) facade. Round columns with small scrolled brackets under eaves of porch, raised on brick piers. Stone stringcourse above basement level. Exposed rafter ends. Windows with round arch lintels and stone sills. SIGNIFICANCE 19. DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION: 1914 ARCHITECT: BUILDER: 10. HISTORICAL_ AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This building retains its original function. It is an important part of historically significant Fort Terry, a major component of U.S. coastal defense systems. It is located within the cluster of Fort Terry buildings grouped near the center of Plum Island and retains its historic context. Location & Adequacy EXTERIOR Brick in fair condition. Type & Condition INTERIOR Wood, with plaster finish in dining area. Type & Condition HVAC oil-fired steam heat with HP boiler. Type & Condition PLUMBING Water and sanitary systems are in satisfactory Services & Condition condition. ELECTRICAL-POWER 208V, 3-phase and 240V, 1-phase - adequate. Service & Distribution ELECTRICAL-LIGHTING Fluorescent and incandescent fixtures. Type & Condition SPECIAL, SYSTEMS None OCCUPANCY 100-person capacity, average 20-30 at lunch. EVALUATION Building in only fair condition; needs major rehabi- tation. Space is over-sized with respect to building functions. Expensive to heat and maintain due to excess space. RECOMMENDATION This building has little lona_-term potential and should be demolished as soon as alternate food pre- paration facilities are provided.
