INTERRELATIONSHIP OF BUILDING AND SURROUNDINGS (Indicate if building or structure is in an historic district) Mr. Heins unearthed 2 old bricks in his garden, one with "37" and one with "600" on it. He wondered if the first might be a date and the other a lot number. The Tuthill/Heins house is located 2.25 miles from the Orient village historic district. 18. OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES OF BUILDING AND SITE (including interior features if known): The ewMet side of the structure is the original house which dates from the very early 1700'x. It remains unchanged; hand-split lathes with forged nails and a form of plaster made from horsehair, seaweed and lime. The yeast side of the present structure was actually another house which was added c.1800. SIGNIFICANCE 19. DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION: 4114y 1700. ARCHITECT: Unknown. BUILDER: Unknown. 20. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: Daniel Tuthill was the grandfather of William Tuthill, who currently lives in the farmhouse next door, to the north. He was preceded by a Glover, whose daughter married a Tuthill. For a while Daniel Tuthill sold penny-candy, pencils and paper from a shop in the house - and later operated a bicycle repair business. Heins started a chocolate factory/store there, which he subsequently moved to the vicinity of the Orient Monument. Virginia Latham, who once lived next door, complained that Addison, one of the famous Tuthill dwarfs, used "to curse and carry on" when he came to visit his relatives. A previals report indicates that in the structure is a "low door in one room for the dwarfs". Actually on the second floor is a door slightly lower that most, which originally led to what was then an attic, but to.coneelude that this was especially built to accommodate the dwarfs, who were occasional visitors, hardly seems reasonable. 21.
