Anne MacKay's house in Brown's Hills, Orient OR 3 2A
Box 97
(the remains of Sylvester Beebe's House }
date: not traced down probably 1800-1840??
original site: on Rt #25 , North side, between the old Petty house (now moved
nearer the point on the South side) and Charlie Rose's house,
the house before the airport. Bought from Amelia Sledjeski,
moved in March 1960 to Brown's Hills, fourth house on the south side.
description: Small salt box house- a larger square, flat roofed building was
attached (see photo) on the original East side. This was torn down about 1900(Of iw)
according to Eddie King. There is a sketch of the original house in the Orient
Historical Society. I have a copy of this sketch. It shows trees and Barns
behind it, a side door where a winnow is now and a front Porch all along
the salt box section.
changes before 1960: The present south-east wall was rebuilt (badly) when the
big house was torn down.A window added ypstairs. The narrow
stairwell was probably moved back at this time to allow
more headroom, and the side door made into a window. The
doorstone for this door was brought with the house and
is now in front of the secont front door. The fireplace
was removed behind the mantle and a chimney put in for
kerosene stoves. The present kitched was refloredwith 4 inch
maple and thesmall bedroom above had some early wall-board put in.
Changes in 1960: All plaster was removed because of crumbling and dumped in the
original basement. The two tiny rooms in the back of the
present living room were removed and their flat ceilings
to enlarge the living room . The parlor was turned into the
present kitchen/dining room and the dry kitchen was turned
into a hall and bathroom. half of the original pantry was
changed to allow a staircase to the basement rooms. A closet
door from the parlor was reused as the bathroom door. Two
fireplaced were added (one in the basement) The old mantel was
removed as too small but was kept in the basement in storage.
Old floor boards (from other houses) were used as wall pannel%ing.
Three old windows from an old house in Jamesport were used
for the present south-east side. 3 oak beams were added in the
living room (there was no oak in the original house) The
Closet doors in the hall, door to the stairs and downstairs
closet doors were from old houses. (The paddle dour was from
the Jamesport house, the others from the old house in Matituck
that Stewart Johnson took the panneling from) . New roof was
added over the old. Half-porch taken away to make the move easier.
Plumbing, electricity & heat added. (one electric wire had
been there.
Interesting features: Unusually large floorboards in the room above the living room,
19-23 inches - all from one tree.) Two "shadow-box"'doors ..40 4 )
preserved because of storm doors, I think.
Changes in 1986: New roof after hurricane, Skylight and large upstairs window
