This large house is located on a prominent site on a
high hill in a low density residential area north of
Main Rd. (NYS Rte. 25) . Narrow stretch of land between
Orient Harbor and Long Island Sound .

Large 21 story, irregular, Victorian house with trun-
cated hip roof. Square tower at SE corner has pyramidal
roof with small console brackets and 3 round-arched
windows . Steeply gabled dormers with pointed windows .
Jerkinhead gable on west facade .

_0. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE:
"Cedarcroft" was originally part of "The Cedars" , 15 acres
bought by W .W. Stephenson. This was the first house built ,
constructed in 1883 by builder Joshua Payne for $4, 500 .
Stephenson's sons and daughters built houses in "The Cedars"
in subsequent decades . Several exist , including OR-4 and
OR-5. According to the owner, the clay tennis court was
installed when the house was built (or shortly afterwards ) ,
and could be the oldest clay tennis court on Long Island .
