A un.que system for turning the cap from within the mdl ss found tn thc Oardmer's Island Windmill and fimr of the othersurv~v- ing Long Island Windmills. The mdler and a helper, using two capstan bars. turn an up- right shaft, which extends trora the fltvor to the ceiling at thc urst level of thc null. A lantem pmum, mounted near the top of the shaft, drives a spur gear on an,whet shaft which extends up thn~ugh the second floor to the curb. On top of th~s shaft a trundle wheel drives against a clrc ular rock suspended fr,,m the cap frame, thus revolvin~ the cap. Th~s internal capstan winding mechan- ism is also f.und m the Gardmer Windmd[ ( 18¢~5 I, the Hook Windmill I1806). and the Shelter Island \Vmdmill (1810), all bulk by Nathaniel [k,mmy V.
