Internal Capstan Winding Mechanism.
A un.que system for turning the cap from
within the mdl ss found tn thc Oardmer's
Island Windmill and fimr of the othersurv~v-
ing Long Island Windmills. The mdler and a
helper, using two capstan bars. turn an up-
right shaft, which extends trora the fltvor to
the ceiling at thc urst level of thc null. A
lantem pmum, mounted near the top of the
shaft, drives a spur gear on an,whet shaft
which extends up thn~ugh the second floor to
the curb. On top of th~s shaft a trundle wheel
drives against a clrc ular rock suspended fr,,m
the cap frame, thus revolvin~ the cap.
Th~s internal capstan winding mechan-
ism is also f.und m the Gardmer Windmd[
( 18¢~5 I, the Hook Windmill I1806). and the
Shelter Island \Vmdmill (1810), all bulk by
Nathaniel [k,mmy V. It was used tn the
Good Ground Wmdmdl budt by Nathamel
[Xm~m¥ V m 1807. and m the Orient W~nd-
mdl said to have been budt by L~mmv V
in 1810. The Pann~ WmJmdl. I,udt by
Samuel Schelhn~er m 1804. also had th~s
