of Main Rd. , in front of the Community Chapel. Residen-
ces in the immediate area are of high architectural
,integrity, of varying historic date .

Roughly worked rectangular stone with no markings .
The milestones in Southold were restored by Mr.
Archibald Young (age 77 ) prior to 1966 . of the 24
milestones between Laurel and Orient Pt . only 3
are missing.

-These ancient milestones are important local land-
marks . Their location broadside to the road reflects
the change in travel habits . When travelers moved more
7lowly, the milestones were read when one was in front
of the marker. "
