Interior includes decorated post boxes and 2-bay counter assembly. SIGNIFICANCE �,�7 111. DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION: 1949 ARCHITECT: BUILDER: ,,o. IIISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This post office is believed to be the first in the United States to be built as a War Memorial . Residents raised the money to dedicate the building as a memorial. to WWII service people from East Marion. They raised more than $7 ,OOQ , which with a $1 , 000 bank loan was sufficient to construct this building.
