Douse interpreted by Ralph Williams Slides by Ralph Williams Report by Joy Dear July 19, 1985 In the period following the America Revolution, a surprisingly large number of houses of similar style were built in Oyster Ponds, both Upper and Lower Necks . (Lower Neck is now East Marion. ) They are of the Georgian tradition commonly called half-houses . Still surviving are perhaps six in East Marion. Miss Ruth Schneider's home is one of these . The house was built c . 1810 and enlarged c . 1850 by the addition of another half-house on the east side . Local legend has it that the original house was built by a sea captain for his bride . He was not destined to enjoy his home for long, for he was lost at sea. THE MAIN ENTRY The front door of the west wing dates to the building of the original house , c . 1810. On the outside the door has raised panels with inserted molding. Inside, the door is flat, with beading outlining the panels . On either side of the front door are decorative glass lights . The glass is early, but the lead tracery over it was applied c . 1900. The lock on the door is fairly early, c . 1850, but the original hinges have been replaced . The small front entry once included a stairway to the attic, or second floor. (See "Upstairs Bedrooms . ) DINrJG ROOM To the right (west) of the entry is a dining room with a fireplace and china cabinet. The centerpiece of the room is the fireplace on its east wall. The mantel is heavily paneled and molded, and surrounds a shallow Rumford fireplace with a country style, c . 1812 iron crane . The 9/6 windows have wood panels between them and the baseboards . These windows may have been full floor length when the house was built in 1810, and shortened and the paneling below them added in the 1850 remodeling. The baseboards seem to have been added c . 18901s , and the chair rail in the 1920's . To the north of the fireplace are a china cabinet and under it a storage closet . The beading on the wood making the back of the china cabinet shows that this cabinet was installed when the house was built, 181C Floorboards in this room are randon width - nine to 14 inches, and date to the original house . The dressed door leading from the entry to the dining room is a 1940's replacement. Southold Town Landmarks Commission, 1985. SCHNEIDER HOUSE, page 2 Kane-Schneider House East Marion EM-9 PARLOR This east wing and its lean-to rear bedroom were added in the house expansion of c . 1850. The batten door leading from the entry into the parlor has iron, two-part lift hinges . Here the floorboards are even width . . . the big trees were disappearing from Long Island. The fireplace, mantel and eared window surrounds are in the 1850's style . The window moldings were a later addition. SOUTH BEDROOM, DOWNSTAIRS The wainscot and its beading on this wall show 1850' s styling. The glass in the 6/3 windows is probably of this time, but the floor is a later installation, probably a repair. KITCHEN A fireplace, oven and ash pit dominate the north wall of the kitchen. The oven is from the original house, C . 1810. A very old, hand-made wooden oven cover with a hand-carved wood handle closes off the oven. The fireplace is shallow and decorative and has been built (probably in the 1850's updating of the house ) to replace the original cooking fireplace, which by that time may have been worn out by use . A cut in the mantel between the fireplace and oven indicates where the never fireplace begins . The wainscot in the kitchen matches the wainscot in the adjoining bedroom, and undoubtedly was applied in the 1850 update . A Dutch door, leading out (north) to the back porch, dates from the 1940' s . This back porch was entirely enclosed at one time . The view over the handsomely planted and cared for garden in the rear is rewarding. A staircase with very narrow treads is located on the west side of the kitchen, and leads upstairs The wall on the left side of the staircase is sheathed in horizontal paneling, and on the right side with vertical paneling. UPSTAIRS BEDROOMS The stairway from the kitchen leads to three upstairs bedrooms . Exposed rafters in the roof are vertically hand sawn, and appear to date to 1810. All three bedrooms have plastered walls and early baseboards . The floor boards are of uneven width and date from the early house . Moldings on the upstairs doors are also c . 1810. The west bedroom is the largest and has a fireplace (now closed) with a mantel that is a simplified version of the mantel in the dining room downstairs, ,just below it . Poth date to c . 1810. Two windows are in the west gable of this bedroom. The east front bedroom is tiny. Its 6/3 windows have early, wavy glass panes . A batten door is cut diagonally at the top to fit the sloping roof. The central chimney stack of the early house (and the oven flue joining it) Southold Town Landmarks Commission, 1985. ' "CHNEIDER HOUSE a e 3 Kane-Schneider House East Marion EM-9 are visible from this room. The chiriney stack probably was used to slightly heat the upstairs in olden days . It is covered with plaster possibly a later day fire prevention effort . A door that leads from this roo, into the unfinished attic over the east wing shows butted rafters . The roof of the east wing is felt to be consistent with the 1350 date of the addition . The north bedroom is also very small . On the floorboards of this room are cuts showing where the original stairway of the 1810 house once entered the attic . Southold Town Landmarks Commission, 1985.
