IIISFORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: Built by General rood Corporation as a wholesale plant for processing and packaging oysters , this is one of agricul- tural East Marion's few industrial buildings . While this building is of architectural interest as an example of early Modernism, it is also of historic interest because it relates to the once-thriving oyster industry. 21. Long Island Oyster Farms EM-5 • East Marion a ■ MA -W q 'I I an, I s Overall view from NW neg: KK I-4. 50 Years Ago February 21, 1936 Gentrot Foods Plans Seafood Plant: If the present plans of the Gen- eral Foods Corporation Inc., of which the Long Island Oyster Farms,with an r - Weniag and shipping plant at Green- po"tr ;is i branch,materialize,there will in the near future be erected in the vi- cinity of Greenport one of the most com- plete and modern plants for the handl- ing of sea food in the country. The General Foods Corporation,it is reported,has purchased a tract of land of about fifty acres at East Marion with shore frontage. The property which is Suffolk Times familiarly known as the "Wind Mill" 2 r property,is located east of the Figh es- tate. A large brick building of modern type -construction, will be erected on the property.A portion of this building will be utilized as an oyster opening and shipping plant for the Long Island Oys- ter Farms of which Capt.Chris.Jensen of Greenport,is the local manager.The present *ping shops of the company which have for a number of years been located on the property of the H.W. Sweet Ship Yard,have outgrown their present location. f a "
