1. NAME OF DISTRICT:
Hamlet of East Marion
2. COUNTY: Suffolk TOWN/CITY: Eouthold
VILLAGE: ERst ~garion
3. DESCRIPTION: The Hamlet of East Marion is bounded on the west by
the unincorporated part of Greenport and on the east by the hamlet
of Orient. Tt extends from Maple Lane on the west to Truman Beach
or what was once called Crook's Island just east of Dam Pond.
This is a rich farming district and the houses lie along the ~in
Road with their fields extending to the north and south. The
terrain gently slopes from the L.I.Sound shore bluffs to the
marshes and inlets on Gardiners Bay and a lake called East Narion
Lake. A large inlet called Dam Pond extends from the b~y to the
~ound beach.
There is only one east-west road through East Zarion and
no railroad, as the LIaR terminates at Greenpor~.
4. SIGNIFICANCE: East Marion was formerly called Rocky Point. It has
been historically a rich farming and fishing community. The old
houses line the Main Road which is the original Kings Highway.
It is marked by 18th century milestones at one mile intervals
and is free of commercial development. Although there were a few
large summer places built for city people in the early 1900's,
they have not changed the character of the area. The visual im-
pact of the old houses along Main Road is very positive. This
might well be considered an historic district with very few
negative intrusions.
