Prince House Orrin captained many vessels , sailing as far as the "Banks" for fish. One vessel was the George Moon whose owner jumped up and down on the wharf in N.Y.C . when he brought in a thousand dollars worth of halibut . In 1878 Orrin pur- chased the Schooner Georgians to engage in the fishing busi- ness , letting 19 year old son Ezra run the farm. At Block Island on one trip, he returned with 1800 lbs of codfish. Orrin and Maria first lived east of the village in the Rev. Howell House , where their first child , Henry, was born. In 1849 he bought a thirty acre farm on the Sound . The ILI house, shown above, was on the S.W. corner of the property and it witnessed many happy gatherings. His two sons' diaries portray a stream of callers, young and old , rela- tives and friends, who often stayed overnight . Intermittent- ly in late summer, they might have boarders , such as a city family on vacation. There were many musical evenings , Louise playing the organ or guitar , Orrin wearing "his usual bright smile, playing his violin and singing, his deep sonorous voice going into a light falsetto on the high notes . " Orrin like other farmers , had to be able to do about everything and always put his time to good use: he would "dress out pickets, " weave baskets for home use , paint and varnish the schooner wagon and the top buggy, build things like the one-horse cart he designed and used mostly for Helen W. Prince. The Descendants of Captain John Prince. 1983 43 FIFTH GENERATION SD z40 getting out muck, press and sell cider. (Once they picked 44 bu. from one tree . ) In 1879 Orrin put bricks on the bottom of the ice house. It "made a first-rate cellar" for their cabbages and turnips. To combat the hard winters in the poorly insulated house , he moved the cookstove from the sum- mer kitchen into the dining room from late fall until spring. The North Road farmers owned a seiner, appropriately named "The Canadian. " Orrin had a J right and he (or one of his sons) put in his share of time seining for the bunkers he used to fertilize his crops. One day in 1855 the "Cana- dians" got 800 , 000 shad , a record catch. ,Orrin sold the farm in 1885 , When Alfred H. Cosden later purchased the property, he cut Mt . Beulah Ave. through the middle, making a pasture on the east and a private golf course on the west . (A description of the house , furnishings, g stables, servants ' homes, and landscaping can be found in Huntting, v.B, pp. 66,67) . Orrin's house was sold and moved to land Fred Hummel had bought in 1888 from Joseph A. Til- linghast on Light House Road. It stands on the N.W. side of the pond where the present Sound View Ave . crosses it and has been extensively remodelled. (now owned by James Bitses) A month after selling the farm Orrin bought a house on Cot- tage Place , Southold , and lived there until his death. (APp•A , 18Z3 , 1909 Maps) #88 .
