_"R HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCF.
This old house still contributes to the ambience of the
Old North Road. It is of special historic interest
because Albert Tillinghast and Charles Payne sold 8 acres
to the U.S . Government in 1856 for the Lighthouse and
Albert was appointed Lighthouse keeper from 1861 to 1866.
The house appears on the 1838 map.

#56. Horace F. Prince Store, later Jefferson's, Peconic. (Horace b. 1816, d. 1889)
This general merchandise store was built by Horace, probably in 1855. Henry W.
Prince clerked for him in 1860. At the time of these photos during Jefferson's
ownership, the Post Office was on the right hand side. Large shutters lying under
the windows were secured over the windows each night. Note the tracks and plat-
form to the right, with the end of a boxcar barely showing. The wagon with bags of
potatoes at left is on the scales being weighed. Robert Jefferson is standing in
front, the man at right possibly Jesse Lewis Case, Rose Newell's father. Frank D.
Smith, Peconic's famous milliner who once had a shop in the rear, is standing by
his bike in the small photo. The upstairs social hall with a stage at front was
reached by a back outside closed stairway. It was the social heart of the communi-
ty. Today the lower front is hidden by a modern commercial extension, the upper
windows gone. The Post Office and store have changed sides.
#60. Albert J. and Mary (Prince) Tillinghast House, Southold. (she b. 1814,
d. 1880) This house on Old North Road with its commanding view directly down Young
r
Ave. was probably built by Albert and Mary about the time of their marriage. Though
quite overgrown and neglected in 1970, its former bustling farm activities were
apparent by the many and varied buildings behind the house. A grindstone acted as
doorstep at the side door and sidelights at the front door whet one's curiosity
enough to peek within. The simple lines and charm of the house with its rambling
additions were somehow enhanced by a fear for its future.

Albert and then his sons bought quite a bit of property
"north-side" which seems to be along or "north--side" of
North Country Road in the Lighthouse area and west . In 1830
Albert J. bought 20 acres of land at the Sound which in-
cluded Horton' s Point . Some of it changed hands several
times; but on July 10th 1856 , Albert J. Tillinghast and
Charles H. Payne sold 8 acres to the United States Govern-
ment for the Lighthouse . Albert was appointed Lighthouse
Keeper from Apr. 13 , 1861 to Oct . 19 1866 . His son John R .
said that on the day his father became Keeper at Horton' s
Point Lighthouse , " it snowed all day. "
Albert and Mary' s farm was in Southold on the west cor-
ner of Lighthouse Road and North Country Road. The once
lovely house faces directly south down Youngs Ave .
