DATE Of: INITIAL CONSTRUCTION: Early 1900s ARCIIITL•C1 _ BUILDER: 20. IIISrORICAL AND ARCHITLCTURAL IMPORTANCE: In 1929 this was the Southold Branch of the Long Island Produce and Fertilizer Co. Inc. An electric motor powers a "mixing machine" for fertilizer. The machine is still there. The elevator was used to fill the bins. These are the white boxes between the buildings under which the far- mers drove their trucks to be filled with fertilizer. Also potatoes were graded in the building. In former days this was a very busy place. Industria. archeologists would be very much interested to see this building with its intact weighing station, mixing machine , elevator and railroad siding. Three small shed roof dormers on southern slope of roof. Scale and weighing platform still survive in small adjacent building. (cont. ) HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: There was an iron foundry on this site in 1858. This building and the lumber yard across the road would form an interesting "district" that recalls the growth and development of Southold.
