DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION:_ circa 1855 ARCHITECT: BUILDER: 20, HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This was built in 1855 for Col. John Wickham as a wing of the historic Hemstead/Terry house that was more recently owned by Dr. Joseph Harthanft, and was demolished in 1986. While other wings were also removed and are now homes and a store on Youngs Avenue , this building is the most significant of these because of its location adjacent to the historic site and because of its Italianate style. Sheet 12 ??. rHLCAH" Form prepared by Rosemary Skye Moritt, research assistant. SD 203 Attachment Hartranft Wing A 20 - continued : According to old accounts of the historic Hempstead house that predated the Terry/Hartranft house on the site , the li story Hempstead house was used as a wing when the 1837 Terry/Hartranft house was built . As such it might have been on the east or west sides of the main house facing Main Road , or it might have been turned sideways and attached to the rear of the 1837 house . Further research on this building and on the other wings that were removed may shed some light on this question.
