20, HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE:
This was built in 1855 for Col. John Wickham as a
wing of the historic Hemstead/Terry house that was more
recently owned by Dr. Joseph Harthanft, and was demolished
in 1986. While other wings were also removed and are now
homes and a store on Youngs Avenue , this building is the
most significant of these because of its location adjacent
to the historic site and because of its Italianate style.
(See SD 64 for archeological site. )

Hartranft Wing
A 20 - continued :
According to old accounts of the historic
Hempstead house that predated the Terry/Hartranft
house on the site , the li story Hempstead house
was used as a wing when the 1837 Terry/Hartranft
house was built . As such it might have been on
the east or west sides of the main house facing
Main Road , or it might have been turned sideways
and attached to the rear of the 1837 house .
Further research on this building and on the
other wings that were removed may shed some light
on this question.
