10. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE:
This row of five attractive houses on the edge of the
beach were built as cottages for the Arshamomaque Inn
that was on the west side of the creek. At that time
they were connected to the inn by a bridge across the
mouth of the creek.
The houses are of exceptional interest because they
are well designed, apparently by a sensitive architect.

A Bridge Over Dry Land: UnVt-
tingly, probably, Bennett DeBeixedon, ,
' lawyer, banker, produce man, creator
of the charming village of Beixefi.0 in
Southold, hotel proprietor .ani; V,
around good fellow generally, Put .,
"fast one" over on Uncle Sam, showed
a lot of originality, cut a lot of red tape,
and gave Government then a tough nut
to crack when he added to the comfort
of his resort town by bui?ding abridge.
In taking a short cut to get around
yards and yards of red tape,Mr.DeBeix-
edon built his bridge and dug his canal
under it later, so when Government
then, who happened to stumble on his
enterprise, asked him why he failed to
get a permit to build a bridge over
navigable waters,he replied:
"1 didn't know it was necessary to get
a permit to build a 'bridge over dry
land."
