" A Bridge Over Dr~ Land: Un~v~t-
tingly, probably, Bennett DeBeix~ion,
m lawyer, banker, produce man, creator
,of the charming village of Be~x_e~o~ 'i~
Southold, hotel -prop~et~r ~. ~l:.. tV,
around good fellow generally; but ~
"faat one" over on Uncle Sam, showed
a lot of originality, cut a lot of red tape,
and gave Government men a tough nut
to crack when he added to the comfort
of his resort town by building a bridge.
In taking a short cut to get around
yards and yards of red tape, Mr. DeBeix-
eden built his bridge and dug his canal
under it later, so when Government
men, who happened to stumble on his
enterprise, asked him why he failed to
get a permit to build a bridge over
navigable waters, he replied:
"I didn't know it was necessary to get
a permit to build a bridge over dry
land."
