with 1-1-story wing on rear, creating a second entrance
on mechanics Street East. Porch across the front with
turned posts, sawn spandrels and Chinese-style railing.

10. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE:
Baldw1n Tuthill Payne, - a civil war veteran, - bought this
house in the 19th century. He wrote about Southold's old
houses for the Long Island Traveler_. These articles are on
file in the Whitaker Collection in the Southold Library.
The house is today owned by his grand daughter, Mrs. Baker.
Payne bought from Wells. It was Wells on the 1873 map.
